Hardik Pandya captaincy records across all formats

Making a high risk gamble during the end stages of a game showcases the character of a leader, but things haven’t gone well for Hardik Pandya in this regard lately. Pandya is regarded to be among the best all-rounders that play the shortest format of the game, boasting of more than 2,200 T20I runs and an SR of over 145 along with 114 wickets as well as 2,800 plus runs in the IPL and 80 wickets. Yet, his captaincy narrative has hit a testing phase. Mumbai Indians’ struggles under his leadership have brought scrutiny, especially as expectations remained high after his successful Gujarat stint.

The difference has been clear. Whether Pandya was guiding a new squad, holding a new name, or handling a veteran team undergoing a change in identity, he has had to handle various kinds of pressure. There have been no comparable results for Mumbai Indians, with inconsistent performance and defeats adding up. However, his captaincies with the Indian squad have remained more or less steady. Still, the contrast between franchise outcomes has sharpened the focus on his leadership decisions.

Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians: IPL Captaincy Impact

Pandya’s best captaincy performances came in his tenure with Gujarat Titans. He won the IPL crown with them in 2022 before finishing second in 2023. In all his IPL captaincy statistics, he has captained over 60 matches, winning 37, which gives him a winning percentage of almost 60%. One notable quality about his captaincy was his clear assignment of responsibilities and calm management under pressure.

However, his stint at Mumbai Indians has been less impressive. As captain after Rohit Sharma, he took up responsibility in 30 games, winning just 14, including a campaign that ended with their side languishing at the bottom of the table. These setbacks have made apparent some weaknesses in his consistency and balance. Nonetheless, his IPL figures are solid based on his early performance. One more thing worth mentioning is his feat as the first IPL captain to scalp five wickets in an inning in 2025.

Indian Captaincy

Internationally, however, Pandya holds a fairly balanced record as well. He is the only man to captain India in 16 T20Is, where he has won 10 games, with a winning rate of over 62%. This has largely been done by relying on supporting the players and ensuring a positive tempo throughout.

In ODIs, Pandya has had the leadership role in three games, out of which he has won two. He has not played any Test match for India because of various reasons like injuries and lack of playing in that format altogether. One of the biggest early victories for him was a 2-0 victory over Ireland. Despite having very little experience in international cricket, Pandya seems to be in control.

Therefore, looking back at his captaincy record, it can be concluded that it includes a successful beginning and some recent struggles. His stint with the Gujarat Titans remains his high point, while Mumbai Indians’ recent results put more pressure on him.
