A high-level BCCI review meeting will take place on Thursday, September 3rd at the Board’s headquarters in Mumbai. As per reports from Times of India, the meeting is meant to examine India’s recent performances and the way forward especially with the 2027 ODI World Cup on the horizon. BCCI President Mithun Manhas and Secretary Devajit Saikia will lead the discussions. Head coach Gautam Gambhir, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and Centre of Excellence head VVS Laxman are expected to attend in person. Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill has been invited and will be present. T20I captain Shreyas Iyer is also part of the meeting and is likely to join either physically or virtually. The main focus will be the white-ball tours of Ireland and England earlier this year.
India lost the two-match T20I series in Ireland 0-2 and the five-match T20I series in England 0-4 including a heavy 125-run defeat in Nottingham. The three-match ODI series in England also ended in a series loss for India. The review will also cover the T20I series in Zimbabwe and the two-Test series against Sri Lanka. Player fitness, injury management, the impact of IPL workload, communication between the selection committee and team management, Hardik Pandya’s recovery, and preparations for the multi-format series in New Zealand later this year are all expected to feature on the agenda.
Rohit Sharma’s Future set to be discussed in Review Meeting
As per reports from Times of India, Rohit Sharma’s place in the Indian setup remains one of the biggest talking points ahead of Thursday’s meeting. The 39-year-old has already stepped away from Test cricket and T20Is, but is still a big part of the ODI format. With the 2027 ODI World Cup still more than a year away, questions about whether he will feature in the long-term plans have grown louder. Reports earlier this season suggested that the selection committee was not keen on retaining Sharma for the World Cup in South Africa, with some even indicating that the Lord’s ODI against England might have been his final appearance. The BCCI quickly issued a denial but the uncertainty has been there. Thursday’s closed-door discussions between the board officials, the coach, the chief selector and the current captains are expected to bring greater clarity on his future role.
Despite the speculation, Rohit has shown he still possesses the skill and hunger that made him one of India’s most successful openers. In the third ODI at Lord’s in July, he smashed a magnificent 138 off 110 balls. It was his first ODI century at the historic venue and a performance that stood out in an otherwise disappointing series for India. The innings included 17 fours and five sixes, silencing many of the immediate questions about his form on that tour. Earlier, during the home ODI series against Afghanistan in June, he contributed solidly, including a fluent 79 off 69 balls in the final match in Chennai that helped seal a 3-0 whitewash. Across that series he scored 143 runs at a good strike rate. At 39, Rohit is no longer the automatic selection and his future is expected to be discussed in this meeting.
