Riyan Parag represents a new-age leader emerging in the cricketing arena of India. The emergence of such a leader has not been unnoticed. Riyan Parag has entered one of the most crucial phases of his life in terms of cricket. After debuting for the Indian National Team in 2024, the youngster has added another feather to his cap – leadership. In the IPL 2026 season, Riyan Parag became the captain of Rajasthan Royals, a position that was not just an experiment anymore. His growth reflects a shift from raw talent to responsibility, backed by strong domestic performances and a breakout IPL 2024 season that put him firmly in the spotlight.
This transition had started much earlier than 2026. In the previous IPL season, Riyan Parag became the temporary captain of the Rajasthan Royals during Sanju Samson’s absence. The young lad demonstrated excellent leadership qualities while playing the game, leading the team with authority on the field. By 2026, the franchise has decided to make this a permanent decision, entrusting Riyan Parag with the captaincy duties.
Riyan Parag’s Journey As a Full-time Captain of RR
Parag’s captaincy of IPL started off with some pressure. He was the captain of Rajasthan Royals in six matches, winning two and losing four in 2025. Overall, the team did not perform well that season, ending up in the bottom half. Nevertheless, Parag’s own performance was exceptional. He had an average of 38.5, scoring a total of 95 runs in the matches.
But what followed in the year before IPL 2026 was a bigger move. It was announced that Parag would be the permanent captain of Rajasthan Royals, being retained for INR 14 crore. Up until now, in his entire career as a captain, he has led the team in 13 matches, winning six and losing seven, with a win ratio of 46.15%. Parag holds the record of becoming the youngest captain of Rajasthan Royals and the first Assamese captain of any IPL team. The numbers show a work in progress, but the role confirms the franchise’s long-term vision
International Debut: Early Days, No Captaincy Yet
Despite Parag’s experiences as a captain domestically and in IPL, he is still at the start of his international career. Parag started representing India in 2024, participating in T20s and ODIs. As of today, he has been playing nine T20Is and one ODI. He scored 106 runs in T20Is, took four wickets, and also three wickets in ODIs.
On the other hand, he has not captained India in any format of the game till now. With few appearances in the international scene, there is a strong competitor in the team who makes Parag more like an all-round option for the country.
Under Riyan Parag, Assam has performed well in all formats with 10 victories from 23 matches at a winning percentage of 43.48%. Riyan Parag was also the captain for T20s such as the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and helped his team emerge victorious several times. Thus, there is a definite trend in the performance of Riyan Parag as a captain.
