“When I See Virat Kohli, I Think of Viv Richards”: Ravi Shastri Explains Why

Ravi Shastri has once again emphasized Virat Kohli’s status as one of cricket’s all-time greats, stating, “When I see Virat Kohli, I think of Viv Richards.”

The former head coach of India shared this insight during a recent media event related to One8, bringing back a comparison he first made back in 2016. Shastri’s remarks came as he reflected on Kohli’s significant impact on modern cricket, his knack for thriving under pressure, and his commanding presence on the field. Kohli, who is among India’s most accomplished batters and former captains, was likened to West Indies legend Sir Vivian Richards for his fearless style, intensity, and ability to influence matches with his sheer willpower.

Shastri pointed out that Kohli’s influence extends far beyond just runs and records. He believes the Indian superstar consistently challenges his opponents, whether he’s batting, fielding, or leading the team. He highlighted Kohli’s readiness to step up in critical moments as a key factor that sets him apart. The former coach also mentioned Kohli’s strong bond with fans, noting that his presence continues to attract crowds and keep audiences captivated across all formats.

Statistics to Support Virat Kohli’s Dominance

The comparison is supported by an impressive list of achievements. Kohli made history by becoming the first cricketer to snag the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Cricketer of the Year, along with the ICC Men’s Test Player of the Year and ICC Men’s ODI Player of the Year, all in the same awards cycle. At the time Shastri first drew this comparison, Kohli was on fire against Australia, racking up half-centuries in all three T20 Internationals during India’s 3-0 series victory, plus two centuries in ODIs. He also broke and set several speed records for reaching major ODI milestones, including being the fastest player to hit 5,000 runs.

On top of that, Kohli solidified his status as a top performer in challenging overseas conditions, scoring centuries in South Africa, Australia, and England. His overall stats further bolster this argument. He has amassed over 27,000 international runs and 80 international centuries. In One-Day Internationals, he boasts an average of over 58, the highest among players with more than 10,000 ODI runs. His record while chasing targets is just as impressive, with an average exceeding 65 in successful run chases.

Significantly, the comparison has also received support from Sir Vivian Richards himself. The West Indies icon has publicly acknowledged similarities in attitude, confidence, and competitive spirit. For Shastri, those qualities remain the strongest link between two players who dominated different eras but carried the same unwavering belief whenever they stepped onto the field.
