Sourav Ganguly Biopic Unveils Rajkummar Rao’s Look on Former Captain’s Birthday

When the creators of “Dada – The Sourav Ganguly Story” revealed its first-look poster, it immediately transported cricket fans back to one of the most iconic moments in Indian sports history. The poster features Rajkummar Rao perfectly capturing Sourav Ganguly’s legendary shirt-waving celebration from the balcony at Lord’s, a moment that truly defined a golden era in Indian cricket. Released on Ganguly’s 54th birthday, the poster also announced that the biopic is set to hit theaters on May 14, 2027. The film will chronicle Ganguly’s journey from a budding cricketer to one of India’s most impactful captains, with Rao taking on the role of the former skipper who transformed the team’s mindset on the global stage.

The scene depicted in the poster harks back to India’s thrilling victory in the 2002 NatWest Series final against England. Ganguly’s shirtless celebration from the Lord’s balcony was more than just an emotional outburst; it was a direct response to England’s Andrew Flintoff, who had celebrated by removing his shirt after a series draw in Mumbai just months earlier. Ganguly’s bold gesture quickly became one of the most memorable images in Indian cricket history.

How Sourav Ganguly’s Lord’s Celebration Became a Part of Cricket History

The unforgettable moment unfolded at the climax of one of India’s most remarkable one-day run chases. On July 13, 2002, during the NatWest Series final at Lord’s, India was set a challenging target of 326 runs after England had posted 325 for five. England’s innings was bolstered by impressive centuries from Marcus Trescothick and captain Nasser Hussain, leaving India with a tough uphill battle in this crucial final.

India got off to a solid start with contributions from Ganguly, who scored 60, and Virender Sehwag, who added 45. However, things took a turn for the worse when the score plummeted to 146 for five, putting India on the brink of yet another defeat in an ODI final. Just when it seemed all hope was lost, two young batsmen stepped up and turned the tide. Mohammad Kaif finished with a brilliant 87 off 75 balls, while Yuvraj Singh chipped in with 69 from 63 deliveries, as the duo forged a vital 121-run partnership.

Their collaboration not only reignited India’s chances but also shifted the pressure squarely onto England. Kaif ultimately led the team to victory, with Zaheer Khan providing crucial support, as India clinched a thrilling two-wicket win in the final over. Moments later, Ganguly was seen on the Lord’s balcony, waving his jersey in pure jubilation, creating an iconic image that perfectly encapsulates the boldness and spirit of his captaincy era.
