Ryan ten Doeschate Sees Nitish Kumar Reddy as India’s Long-Term Hardik Pandya Alternative

India seems to be honing in on a dependable pace-bowling all-rounder, and it looks like Nitish Kumar Reddy is at the forefront of that search. Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has pointed to the 23-year-old as the prime candidate to step into the shoes of Hardik Pandya. Over the past 18 months, Nitish has been making his way into India’s ODI plans, and Ten Doeschate has expressed his belief that “Nitish is the natural successor or backup to Hardik.”

With Hardik dealing with yet another fitness issue, India is putting significant resources into Nitish as they gear up for the 2027 ODI World Cup. His knack for contributing with both bat and ball makes him the closest fit to replicate the balance that Hardik brings to the team.

The Indian team management feels that Nitish’s growth is happening at just the right moment. While Hardik is undeniably a key player and a reliable finisher when he’s fit, his ongoing injury troubles have prompted selectors to seek more depth in the all-rounder position. Nitish’s increasing physical strength and steady improvement have bolstered his case as a long-term solution for India in this role.

Hardik’s recovery from a quadriceps strain has caused him to miss the upcoming ODI series in England. This injury comes on the heels of his efforts to bounce back from a previous back issue. Because of this, Nitish has stepped up as the leading candidate to fill in for him.

His recent outings against Afghanistan have shown some promising signs. Nitish played in two ODIs during the series, bowling a total of 10 overs and claiming three wickets. In Dharamshala, he made a significant impact by dismissing centurion Rahmanullah Gurbaz with a well-placed inswinging yorker, wrapping up with impressive figures of 3 for 31 from four overs. The team management sees these performances as a strong indication that he’s ready to take on more responsibility at the international level.

India’s Eye on South Africa 2027

India is ramping up its preparations for the 2027 World Cup, which will take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. The playing conditions in South Africa are expected to favor pace bowlers, making seam-bowling all-rounders essential for a well-rounded team. This has put players like Nitish in the spotlight.

Ten Doeschate pointed out that “Especially in South Africa, when you want to play three proper out-and-out seamers, those guys are going to need to bat. So yeah, a lot of good signs on the all-rounder front and also on the fast-bowling front.”

This also highlights the importance of having strong lower-order batting. Alongside Nitish, the team is evaluating talents like Gurnoor Brar, Harsh Dubey, Prince Yadav, and Auqib Nabi. However, Nitish stands out as the top choice because he brings both batting depth and bowling versatility to the table. For now, India views him as the closest successor to Hardik and a vital component of their World Cup strategy.
