Both the players are two different axes when it comes to captaincy but Virat feels a large portion of him becoming captain was to do with Dhoni’s observation. Speaking on an Instagram show ‘Reminisce with Ash’ hosted by off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, Virat Kohli spoke his mind.
I was always in MS’s ears
On the Instagram show, when Ashwin asked Kohli whether his captaincy was process driven or did it just happen. Kohli said he loves taking responsibilities and added that he had been into Dhoni’s ears to learn more about the game, which also played some role in him becoming the captain.
“I was always in MS’s ears. He would deny a lot of things but discuss a lot also. I think he got a lot of confidence in me and a large part of me becoming captain has to do with him observing me over a long period of time,” Indian skipper said in the Instagram Show.
He also added that things cannot be like appointing someone captain of the side all of a sudden.
“….he (Dhoni) has to take responsibility to identify the person who can take the charge after him and then slowly see how the guy develops. I think he played a big role in that…..” added Kohli.
Chase against Pakistan in Asia Cup was a gamechanger
Virat also recalled chasing 330 runs against Pakistan in 2012 edition of Asia Cup. Talking about the chase he said he will remember the chase not because it was a successful game changer chase but also because later it turned out to be last ODI of Sachin Tendulkar; batting with him in the middle for a while will always be in his memories.
He also talked about the tactics he used to play Saeed Ajmal to negate his doosra.
“His doosra was quite difficult to face but his off spinner was not that lethal so I said I am going to hit him over covers consistently and it just paid off. As soon as I negated his doosra, his potency became lesser and that help me to get over him,” said the right-handed batsman.
