Smriti Mandhana, who serves as India’s vice-captain and is one of the team’s most dependable batters, delivered yet another match-winning performance as India triumphed over the Netherlands by 95 runs in the Women’s T20 World Cup at Headingley, Leeds. Mandhana’s impressive 74 runs off just 47 balls propelled India to a record-breaking World Cup total of 209/5, setting the stage for a commanding victory. The left-handed batter hit 11 fours and a six, expertly guiding the innings after a cautious start. Her innings came to an end when she misjudged a lofted shot off Caroline de Lange, leading to a catch by Iris Zwilling. This performance also marked a milestone for Mandhana, making her the first batter in both men’s and women’s T20 internationals to surpass 600 fours.
Smriti Mandhana when she was asked about scoring a second consecutive half-century and the batting conditions, she said, “I think it was a good batting wicket for sure. I mean, whenever we have come to Leeds, I’ve played a few matches here in the Hundred, but it’s always been a good batting wicket and a quick outfield.”
From the very beginning, India’s opening duo took control. Mandhana and Shafali Verma put together a formidable partnership of 115 runs for the first wicket in just 70 balls, putting the Dutch bowlers on the back foot. While Shafali was aggressive early on, scoring 55 off 38 balls, Mandhana picked up the pace during the middle overs, maintaining a high scoring rate. Late contributions from Richa Ghosh and Deepti Sharma ensured India crossed the 200-run threshold for the first time in Women’s T20 World Cup history.
India Women Hammer Netherlands, Leapfrog Australia to Go Top of Table
India’s recent victory has propelled them to the top of Group A, edging out Australia thanks to a better net run rate. Currently, India boasts a net run rate of 3.98, while Australia sits at 3.88, following India’s impressive back-to-back wins against Pakistan and the Netherlands. In their match against the Netherlands, which had a target of 210, the Dutch team started off cautiously but never really threatened to reach the goal. Heather Siegers contributed 21 runs, Babette de Leede added 28, and Sterre Kalis chipped in with 18, but none of them could forge a game-changing partnership.
India’s bowlers quickly seized control of the match. Debutant Nandini Sharma made an impact by dismissing crucial batters, finishing with figures of 2/22. Left-arm spinner Shree Charani was the standout performer, taking 4 wickets for just 19 runs and dismantling the middle order. Shafali Verma also shone with the ball, claiming 3 wickets for 20 runs, rounding off a stellar all-round display. Ultimately, the Netherlands were bowled out for a mere 114 runs in just 17.3 overs.
However, the win was slightly overshadowed by an injury concern. All-rounder Shreyanka Patil suffered an ankle injury while fielding and had to leave the ground on a stretcher. India will now await updates on her condition ahead of their crucial Group A clash against South Africa.
