The International Cricket Council (ICC), which met on Thursday to discuss the fate of the T20 World Cup 2020 scheduled to be played in Australia this year, has deferred its entire items on its agenda till June 10 citing that breach of confidentiality.
ICC on Thursday through a media release informed that the board members felt need for an immediate attention to ensure the confidentiality of the board.
Immediate need of investigation
Amidst the coronavirus pandemic when other cricket activity has been suspended, ICC officials met to discuss the fate of much anticipated T20 World Cup 2020 along with the its new initiative ICC Test Championship. Future tour schedules were also included in the agenda which ICC deferred on the ground of Sanctity and secrecy. However, the apex body said that the matter will undergo investigation.
“There was unanimous agreement to immediately initiate an independent investigation led by the ICC’s Ethics Officer and supported by global experts. The Board will be updated on this by the ICC CEO at its next meeting on 10 June 2020,” ICC media release says.
ICC to continue discussions with stakeholders
Despite the postponement the board is optimistic to explore the contingency plan at a time when the public health situation is changing continuously in wake of the COVID-19.
“The Board also requested the ICC management continue with their discussions with stakeholders in exploring various contingency options in light of the rapidly changing public health situation caused by the COVID-19 virus,” added ICC in its media release.
Notably, the ICC is planning out a contingency plan for its future tours and postponements of already scheduled matches. The ICC women’s world cup and next year’s T20 World Cup will also get a hit if ICC doesn’t finalise the contingency plan sooner than latter.
