CSK Might Opt For Indian Coaches After Stephen Fleming Ends 18-Year Stint: Reports

The Chennai Super Kings are gearing up for a major shift in their history as they prepare to move forward without Stephen Fleming. According to Reports, the growing significance of local talent in the IPL, CSK might be on the lookout for an Indian head coach to steer the team into its next chapter. This change comes after Fleming and CSK decided to part ways after an impressive 18-year partnership, marking one of the longest coach-franchise relationships in the league. The decision was made following three consecutive seasons without a playoff appearance and an internal review after the Texas Super Kings finished at the bottom of the Major League Cricket standings.

Initially, CSK management had hoped to keep Fleming on board until the end of the current cycle. However, disappointing performances in the IPL, MLC, and SA20 prompted the franchise to seek a new direction. MS Dhoni, who is currently in the UK, is expected to play a pivotal role in the selection process and may meet with potential candidates during The Hundred tournament.

Three Names in Contention For CSK Coaching Role

1. Hemang Badani

Former India batter Hemang Badani has quickly emerged as a top contender for the role. His recent time with the Delhi Capitals saw the team finish fifth and sixth in IPL 2025 and 2026, respectively, but it’s his knack for player development and success in domestic leagues that really sets him apart.

Badani led the Chepauk Super Gillies to an impressive four TNPL titles over seven seasons and was also part of championship-winning teams with Sunrisers Eastern Cape in SA20 and Dubai Capitals in ILT20. His deep understanding of the Chepauk conditions, along with his experience mentoring young talents like Ashutosh Sharma, Sameer Rizvi, and Abishek Porel, could align perfectly with CSK’s plans for rebuilding.

2. MS Dhoni

No one embodies CSK quite like MS Dhoni. The legendary former captain has steered the team to five IPL championships and ten finals, crafting one of the most formidable identities in the league.

What sets Dhoni apart is his exceptional talent for managing players. He not only rejuvenated the careers of seasoned pros but also championed younger talents who went on to become mainstays for both India and CSK. His impact in the dressing room is still profound, making him a top choice if the franchise is looking to maintain continuity.

3. Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin represents a different but equally attractive direction for CSK. The former off-spinner combined coaching and playing duties with Dublin Guardians in the European T20 Premier League, showing his interest in leadership roles after retirement.

With more than 750 international wickets and two IPL titles with CSK in 2010 and 2011, Ashwin understands both elite cricket and the franchise culture. His analytical approach and tactical planning could help CSK adapt to the fast-changing demands of modern T20 cricket.
