Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has officially parted ways with legendary head coach Stephen Fleming, ending a historic 18-year partnership. According to reports from Express Sports, the franchise is shifting its focus toward Indian coaches due to the increasingly prominent role of local players in the IPL ecosystem. The decision to revamp the coaching staff comes on the heels of a challenging phase for the franchise.
Following MS Dhoni passing the captaincy baton to Ruturaj Gaikwad after the 2023 season, CSK struggled on the field, failing to qualify for the playoffs for three consecutive seasons, including a bottom-of-the-table finish in 2025 and an 8th-place finish in IPL 2026. With the management looking for a fresh direction that embraces deep roots in Indian domestic cricket culture, two prominent Indian names have emerged as frontrunners, one of them is the former T20 World Cup winning coach, Rahul Dravid.
The former India head coach is a primary candidate. Reports indicate Dravid recently held a comprehensive 1.5-hour vision meeting with CSK owner Rupa Gurunath and CEO Kasi Viswanathan. The final sign-off is expected to lie with MS Dhoni and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. The former India cricketer and current coach, Hemang Badani has emerged as a strong homegrown option.
His acute understanding of the local Tamil Nadu cricket pipeline makes him a highly valuable asset for nurturing the franchise’s domestic core. The CSK CEO has confirmed that the incoming head coach will be given full authority to structure and select the remaining support staff ahead of the IPL 2027 season. A definitive roadmap and further announcements are expected to follow a formal franchise review meeting scheduled right after the conclusion of Major League Cricket (MLC).
Stephen Fleming part ways with CSK after 18 years partnership
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and head coach Stephen Fleming have mutually ended their historic 18-year association, marking the definitive conclusion of an iconic era in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Fleming initially joined the franchise as a player during the inaugural 2008 season before transitioning seamlessly into the head coach role in 2009.
Alongside legendary captain MS Dhoni, Fleming forged one of the most successful and enduring partnerships in world cricket. Under his tactical guidance, CSK established a franchise culture rooted in composure and stability, reaching 10 IPL finals and securing a record 12 playoff appearances. His highly decorated coaching tenure yielded five IPL titles (2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, 2023) and two Champions League T20 crowns.
However, a recent slump saw the team miss the playoffs for three consecutive seasons following their 2023 triumph, including an eighth-place finish in IPL 2026. His exit from CSK’s global sister franchises, Joburg Super Kings and Texas Super Kings, also closely followed a bottom-place finish in MLC 2026. Described by owner Rupa Gurunath as the franchise’s “heartbeat,” Fleming expressed immense gratitude upon his departure as CSK actively transitions toward an Indian coaching setup.
