Oscar Piastri came close to claiming his first Formula 1 drivers’ championship in 2025 after leading the standings for much of the season, but it ultimately slipped away from him.
With nine races still to run, the McLaren driver held a commanding 34-point lead over team-mate Lando Norris. However, a late swing in form saw Norris turn the tables and go on to win the title. Piastri eventually finished third overall, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen also ending the season ahead of him.
The way the title fight played out sparked plenty of debate among fans and analysts. Some questioned whether McLaren’s strategy decisions at key moments favoured Norris during the final stretch of the season. Others felt Piastri’s own dip in performance late in the year played a bigger role, suggesting results on track rather than team influence decided the outcome.
Following the season, speculation began to grow about Piastri’s long-term future with the Woking-based team. Reports suggested his management, led by former Formula 1 driver Mark Webber, may be weighing up options despite McLaren being the reigning constructors’ champions.
For now, however, Piastri remains firmly contracted to McLaren, with his current deal running until the end of the 2028 season. In that aspect, the young Australian from Victoria has been extended a clear instruction for the brand new season that undergoes live after a quarter from the present day. And it’s to completely put 2025 on the back burner as far as submitting a bid to claim a maiden title is concerned. And that could- or could not- transpire in 2026, but the blazingly fast Aussie would certainly hope for that to happen for real. At least once in his F1 stint, don’t you think?
