Aston Martin’s revamped AMR26B is quickly becoming one of the hottest topics for the 2026 Formula 1 season, and its influence is expected to reach well beyond just lap times. The car’s first appearance at the Hungarian Grand Prix could be pivotal, as it may reveal why Aston Martin’s updated F1 machine is crucial for the 2027 driver market. Ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso played down the significance of the upgrade despite the anticipation around it. Speaking during Thursday’s FIA press conference, he said, “I don’t think that it changes anything to the approach that we had so far this year. We go to every race trying to maximise what we have in [our] hands. We are here to win races and to fight for championships. We didn’t start the season that way, and we will not be that way either, because we are just in a process of understanding these regulations and getting into the good path with the development of the car.”
Hungary Becomes The Turning Point For Aston Martin’s 2026 Season
After a tough first half of the season, Aston Martin decided to skip the small upgrades and instead go for a complete redesign ahead of Hungary. Adrian Newey acknowledged that this choice was a tough pill to swallow, especially since the team had to watch their competitors make strides while Aston Martin stayed mostly the same for the first ten races. However, he believes this strategy was made with the future in mind, thinking that the short-term sacrifices would lead to bigger rewards later this season and a significant leap in 2027.
The AMR26B is much more than just a standard update. Aston Martin has managed to shed weight from crucial components, which meant they had to re-homologate and crash-test the front chassis. While the chassis layout and gearbox design remain unchanged, they’ve revamped the rear suspension, introduced a new nose, and completely overhauled the aerodynamic package. The goal is to get the car as close to the minimum weight limit as possible while unlocking a substantial performance boost once it hits the track.
This upgrade could also influence Alonso’s future. If Aston Martin can regain its competitiveness before Honda rolls out its power unit upgrade at the Dutch Grand Prix, Alonso is likely to stick around for 2027. However, if progress continues to be slow, a return to Alpine might become a viable option. Such a shift could lead to more changes, with Franco Colapinto possibly making a comeback at Williams, while Aston Martin might consider Carlos Sainz or Esteban Ocon as potential replacements.
Despite the hopeful outlook, Aston Martin is keeping its expectations in check. Chief Trackside Officer Mike Krack mentioned that the immediate aim is simply to rejoin the midfield battle after several races where the team struggled to keep up. With the major aerodynamic changes and weight reductions now wrapped up, Aston Martin feels that the long wait for significant upgrades is finally over, making the Hungarian Grand Prix a pivotal weekend for both its 2026 campaign and its long-term aspirations.
