Kane Williamson has never got the credit that he deserves. Yet, he does not complain. While the fans rave about the splendor in Virat Kohli’s cover drive or the majesty in a Rohit Sharma pull shot or celebrate the unorthodox batting Genius of Steve Smith, this man has never got the same adulation of his contemporaries.
Kane Williamson has gone about his business in a sedate way, and is already on his way to becoming the greatest New Zealand batsman of all time. Watching Williamson at his best is like watching the flow of a stream. It is pure, pristine and clear. And, the Kiwi skipper has the numbers to back him.
Williamson has played 144 innings in ODI cricket and has scored 6173 runs at an incredible average of 47.48. He is already the fifth highest run scorer for the Kiwis in the ODI format, and also has 13 centuries to his name.
In the white flannels too, Williamson has piled on the runs. He averages an incredible 50.99 in Test cricket, and is the third highest run scorer for his side with 6476 runs to his name.
Williamson is strong off both the front and back foot. His cover drive is a feast to the eye, the flick off his pads is a sight to behold, and his balance off either foot makes him an asset for his side.
An incredible 2019 in ODI cricket
And, the elegant batsman was declared the New Zealand’s ODI Player of the Year, by the New Zealand cricket board, a deserving award for one of the finest willow wielders from the land of the Kiwis.
In 2019, Williamson was at the height of his powers. The master batsman scored 948 runs last year at an astounding average of 59.25, and also scored 2 hundreds and 6 fifties.
And in the biggest event of the year, the 2019 World Cup, Williamson was in riveting form. He aggregated a whopping 578 runs in the 12th edition of the multi nation tournament, and also walloped 2 hundreds during the event.
He also led the team with aplomb during the mega event, and the Kiwis finished as the runners up, losing a pulsating summit clash against England. The Kiwi batsman was the fourth highest run scorer of the tournament, and his brilliance with the bat played a key role in the Kiwis finishing as the runners up.
One of the Greats of the modern era
With his riveting deeds with the willow, Williamson has earned the right to be ranked among the greatest willow wielders in modern day cricket. The Kiwi legend is not even 30 years old, and has a lot of battles ahead of him.
In an era when hitting against the line is no longer frowned upon, when banter is a common affair among the players today, Williamson is the finest gentleman left in the game.
