Liverpool’s luck in the Premier League has been on the downhill for some time. And when the Premier League 2019-2020 season looked different for the Reds, the coronavirus pandemic has scripted a different story .
The club’s run in the Premier League over the years is nothing short of a drama film. It began under the captaincy of club legend Steven Gerrard and is continuing now under the era of Jurgen Klopp, probably the best manager the club has signed till date.
Rumours Of Cancellation of Premier League 2019-20 Abound
Liverpool FC have appeared resolute on winning the Premier League 2019-20 and have evidently raced on the top quite early, finishing 25 points ahead of the second place holder Manchester City but the recent pandemic has suspended the Premier League indefinitely and there are rumours that the league could be cancelled.
It will be a nightmare for the club president Michael S. Gordon, coach Jurgen Klopp and the players, if we were to believe reports published in the Telegraph . According to the report there is no guarantee that Liverpool would be crowned as the Premier League 2019-20 champions if the current season was cut short due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
While this report suggested no possible outcome except for a possibility that Liverpool will not be the guaranteed winners of the Premier League and accordingly, the various statements that have been generated on the topic are two-sided with no perfect conclusion.
Some have argued for Liverpool to be awarded the title as they would have won it either way after two fixtures but others wish that the league is continued after the pandemic is over as it is the best way to declare a winner.
“I’ve heard some fake news that UEFA will advise leagues to finish the championships now and declare the winners who are on the top currently. I can say that it is not true. Our goal is to finish the league and we didn’t recommend anything of this sort. I cannot guarantee that the competition will end, as others have risked saying, before June 30.”
UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin on the matter
Liverpool’s Unfortunate Run For Premier League title
It won’t be the first time that Liverpool will be denied the Premier League title but this time it will not be other teams to be blamed.
The misery of title race for Liverpool began under Steve Gerrard when the team managed to remain 5 points clear of the second positioned Chelsea with only 3 games to spare in the 2013-14 season.
Everyone was quite sure that Liverpool will win the league but the club managed to lose the title race to Manchester City.
It has always been Manchester City on the other side whenever Liverpool has fallen short of points or goals to finish in the first place.
In the 2013-14 season, Manchester City managed to outclass Liverpool as they finished the league with 86 points while Liverpool could manage only 84 points and this was not the only time they were behind by a point or two. In the 2018-19 season, the Jordan Henderson-led club finished just one point short of the winners, Manchester City.
The winner of the league in 2018-19 season could not be decided until the last weekday, and it all came down to the last week where both the teams won their respective games and Manchester City enjoyed the 1-point league to finish on the top.
Liverpool’s luck in the Premier League has always been downhill and this continues this year too. The team is 25 points ahead, but there is a possibility that there will be no winner this year if the league gets cancelled.
The Bottom Three
Suspending the league right now will yield outrageous outcomes as the teams sitting at the bottom three currently will not have a chance to rejuvenate themselves and it will be unfair for them.
As the Premier League rulebook explains that the bottom three have to be relegated, and not only that if anyone of the leagues in Europe gets cancelled, the others will have to be cancelled too.
This will deny the chance for the teams to fight for the top position and hence, there are a lot of possibilities that the league will be cancelled without a winner.
If the premier league was to be handed to Liverpool without playing the remaining matches that would mean that the bottom three teams will be automatically relegated.
This will not be a fair decision for the teams and there is a possibility that the teams can avoid the drop mathematically.
Jurgen Klopp’s Response
Jurgen Klopp has very cleverly cleared himself of all the speculation and has remained silent over the topic but there were a few statements by the player that focused on the Liverpool’s state in the Premier League.
In a heartfelt letter penned to the Liverpool fans, Klopp said, “I don’t think this is a moment where the thoughts of a football manager should be important, but I understand that the club supporters will want to hear from the team and I will front that.”
He continued with regards to the recent conditions and said, “First and foremost, we have to do whatever we can to protect one another. As I’ve said before, Football always seems the most important of the least important things. Today football matches are not important at all. If it’s a choice between football and the good of society, it’s no contest. Not one of us knows what the outcome will be and all we can do is believe that the authorities will take decisions based on sound judgement and reality.”
While a date has not been for the action to get underway again, there are quite a few rumours that the domestic campaigns across Europe will not be completed.
