Most Sixes In IPL Seasons By Players

There is no doubt that the Indian Premier League (IPL) is well known for its big hitting; however, this year’s IPL competition will be remembered as the year in which batmanship has seen a new level. A young batsman from Rajasthan Royals named Vaibhav Sooryavanshi managed to surpass Chris Gayle’s historic feat of hitting the maximum number of sixes during the ongoing season. In a thrilling innings against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator, he hit 59 sixes – an achievement that helped him break Gayle’s record with 65 maximums scored in only 15 matches.

In fact, it happened during an extraordinary 97-ball innings in which Sooryavanshi hit an incredible 12 sixes and was only 3 runs short of a century. This young man smashed the ball all around the park and became the quickest to reach 50 in 16 balls. Sooryavanshi broke Gayle’s long-held record through aggressive batting against both pace and bouncer deliveries. Earlier, he had also become the fastest to score an IPL century and the youngest player with 100 T20 sixes.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Sets New IPL Benchmark 

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is now at the helm of affairs on the list for most sixes hit in one IPL season. The opener hit 65 sixes in IPL 2026 and did so by playing a mere 266 balls. The strike rate and consistency with which Vaibhav Sooryavanshi hit his maximums are what made it such a monumental achievement. In fact, the Indian opener also became only the third batter to have hit over 50 sixes in one IPL edition.

The youngster hit 680 runs across 15 matches in IPL 2026, which included a brilliant century and four fifties. In fact, during one of the innings, he hit 103 runs while hitting 12 sixes against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Sooryavanshi thus broke the record for maximum sixes hit by an Indian player in one IPL inning, sharing the record with Ajinkya Rahane. This made him the biggest six-hitting player of IPL 2026.

Chris Gayle, Andre Russell And Other Big Hitters

Before Sooryavanshi’s rise, Chris Gayle dominated this record for 14 years. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru batter smashed 59 sixes in IPL 2012 while scoring 733 runs and winning the Orange Cap. Gayle also appears fourth on the all-time list with 51 sixes in IPL 2013. His clean striking and ability to clear boundaries with ease made him the face of power-hitting during the early IPL years.

Andre Russell holds third place with 52 sixes for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2019. The West Indies all-rounder produced several match-winning finishes that season with his aggressive batting in the middle order. Rajasthan Royals batter Jos Buttler is fifth on the list with 45 sixes in IPL 2022. Meanwhile, Abhishek Sharma’s 42 sixes in IPL 2024 earlier stood as the highest by an Indian player before Sooryavanshi broke the mark. Together, these performances show how six-hitting has become one of the biggest attractions of the IPL era.
