Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany was taken to the hospital on Friday, October 23, after he reportedly suffered a collapse during a training session at the club’s training ground in Munich. The 40-year-old Belgian is currently undergoing medical examinations, with the club informing that he will remain under medical observation.
In a statement, the club announced, “Vincent Kompany had to seek medical treatment on Friday after collapsing during training for FC Bayern’s amateurs.” “The first-team coach had been watching the second team’s session. Kompany will undergo a thorough examination in the hospital and remain in medical care,” it added.
“For the time being, his coaching staff will manage training and match operations.”
The incident comes after Kompany had been dealing with a viral infection that caused pain in his legs. He had missed training sessions and a pre-match press conference ahead of UEFA Champions League fixture against Arsenal earlier this week.
Bayern Munich prioritize Vincent Kompany’s health
Despite his recent illness, Kompany returned to the touchline for Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Arsenal, which ended in a 2-2 draw. Bayern had previously beaten RB Leipzig 6-1 in the Bundesliga, with Kompany reportedly struggling during the game.
Bayern’s board member for sport, Max Eberl, said that the manager’s health was the club’s main concern and assured him of the necessary medical support as well as time to recover. The German club also informed that its coaching staff would handle the team duties in the meantime.
Notably, Bayern are scheduled to lock horns with SC Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday, October 25. However, Kompany’s availability for the fixture remains uncertain as he undergoes further medical examinations.
