Just one partnership can completely alter the dynamics of T20 matches. In the Indian Premier League, which is all about quick action, it is only huge partnerships that end up deciding the results of matches. Once the two batsmen are settled in the middle, the game changes completely for the better. Through the years, there have been some great partnerships in the history of the Indian Premier League. The top partnerships show what control, timing, and scoring prowess can accomplish. At the top sits a dominant 229-run stand, followed closely by other 200-plus efforts that rewrote match scripts and stunned bowling attacks.
Apart from putting in some amazing scores on the board, the players made short work of the bowlers. What was really impressive was that some of the names kept repeating as the game went along. The top five partnerships of all times in the history of IPL are as follows.
229 runs – Kohli & de Villiers (2016)
The highest scoring stand is held by Kohli and de Villiers. During their match against Gujarat Lions in 2016, while representing Royal Challengers Bangalore, they scored 229 runs for the second wicket. This partnership came after an initial setback. Kohli scored 109 runs, whereas de Villiers scored 129* runs. This record has not been broken yet. The partnership powered RCB to 248/3.
220 runs – KL Rahul & Nitish Rana (2026)
The next one is a new one. KL Rahul and Nitish Rana put on 220 runs for Delhi Capitals versus Punjab Kings in 2026. This partnership came after losing a wicket early on. Rahul was dominant with an undefeated 150+ run score, and Rana made quick work of 91 runs. Together, they lifted the total to 264/2, one of the biggest team scores.
215* runs – Kohli & de Villiers (2015)
Kohli and de Villiers were not new faces when it came to putting up such a display in their respective teams. In 2015, they played an undefeated partnership of 215 runs between themselves. Kohli scored 82* not out, while de Villiers struck a stunning 133* not out. This stand came after a slow start and turned the match completely, guiding RCB to a commanding total.
210* runs – Rahul & de Kock (2022)
KL Rahul was the partner of Quinton de Kock at Lucknow Super Giants in 2022. Both of them scored 210 runs for the first wicket without getting out in the match between Lucknow Super Giants and Kolkata Knight Riders. Quinton de Kock scored 140*, whereas KL Rahul scored 68*. The opening stand ensured a strong total without losing a wicket.

210 runs – Gill & Sai Sudharsan (2024)
The last entry on the list comes from Shubman Gill and B Sai Sudharsan in 2024, with their impressive opening partnership of 210 runs against the Chennai Super Kings while playing for Gujarat Titans. The duo registered hundreds, Gill scoring 104 runs, while Sudharsan got 103 runs. Their effort set up a total above 230 and showcased perfect balance between aggression and control.
From these partnerships, one trend becomes obvious. A high score in IPL tends to come in the form of a long, unbroken partnership. What’s more, the involvement of some players multiple times shows just how good batter performances can be under pressure in the tournament. As the league evolves, breaking the 229-run mark remains a major benchmark.
