George Russell hands FIA extraordinary praise after F1 rule changes

FIA has received one of its greatest compliments from George Russell after Formula 1 decided to make changes in the 2026 regulation changes before the Miami Grand Prix. The new regulations were likely to see the introduction of smaller vehicles, higher electrical power, and active aerodynamics, which have been a source of worry for drivers regarding their safety and racing experience. According to Russell, the organization responded to their concerns by listening to their issues carefully. As the director of Grand Prix Drivers’ Association, Russell was glad about the new cooperation between drivers and the officials regarding high closing speeds.

George Russell was all praise about the rule changes as he said, “It’s definitely the most collaborative they’ve ever been in this regard, which is positive.”

Russell noted that the FIA had convened a number of meetings throughout April with drivers, teams, and manufacturers regarding potential amendments to the new rules for the power units. The talks gathered steam amid the forced hiatus brought about by the cancellation of the events in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Given that the upcoming race is to be held in Miami, Russell stated that the modified rules will lower the likelihood of incidents like the one experienced by Franco Colapinto and Oliver Bearman in Japan.

According to Russell, the primary issue was the considerable difference in speeds between cars on straights. With the initial proposal, some drivers expressed their worries that the use of batteries and aerodynamics would result in rapid closure speeds, leading to more serious accidents. The revised package solves this problem, according to Russell. Moreover, he emphasized that this experience showed how drivers could help identify issues before they emerge on the track. In Russell’s view, had the GPDA been consulted at an earlier stage, some of the fears regarding the 2026 regulations would have been avoided. The FIA has committed to considering drivers’ opinions in the future development of such packages.

What Russell Said About Driver Input?

Russell further highlighted that the discussion had been constructive and the FIA had actually taken note. He said that the new set-up would benefit everybody since drivers had provided valuable information based on their experience inside the car.

The introduction of new regulations in 2026 is one of the major changes in Formula One since its inception. The cars will be lighter and smaller in size, and power units will run using 100% renewable fuels, while also having an almost equal distribution between combustion and electric power. From Russell’s point of view, the most crucial result of the new regulations is increased safety.

Charles Leclerc Wants Racing to Stay Natural

It is clear that Leclerc realizes that the drivers do not want the changes to be detrimental to the racing process. According to him, the ratio of the electric part and aerodynamics of the car should make the driver able to attack, defend, and stay close behind other drivers.

The Ferrari driver, Charles Leclerc, also questioned how the cars would perform during wheel-to-wheel action since there was a need for predictability in performance and closing speeds.
