Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir is of the opinion that Virat Kohli’s supreme fitness plays a key role in making him super successful in the shortest format of the game.
Regarded as one of the best batsmen of the modern era, Kohli has a prolific record in all formats of the game; the 31-year-old averages more than 50 across the three formats.
The Indian captain, who mostly prefers playing textbook shots, has still managed to make his mark in T20s, scoring 2,794 runs from 82 games with an average of 50.8.
Applauding Kohli’s prolific stats on Star Sports, Gautam Gambhir said that being a smart cricketer has enabled the Royal Challengers Bangalore star to be so effective in T20 cricket.
“He (Kohli) was always a very smart cricketer, but then he turned his entire T20 career into a very successful one, just by being supremely fit.”
Gautam Gambhir feels Kohli’s ability to rotate the strike is second to none
Besides hailing Virat Kohli’s fitness, Gautam Gambhir also lauded the Indian skipper’s running between the wickets.
“The most important thing is that he runs really well between the wickets, not many people do it. There are very few cricketers in world cricket at this time who can rotate of every ball and that is what Virat Kohli does really well and that’s why he’s different from the rest.”
Gambhir further went on to add that Kohli is more consistent than his teammate and Indian limited overs vice-captain, Rohit Sharma when it comes to rotating the strike.
“You see Rohit Sharma, probably Rohit Sharma doesn’t have that quality which Virat Kohli has to rotate the strike. Rohit Sharma has the ability to hit those big shots, but that’s where Virat Kohli is more consistent than Rohit Sharma.”
Both Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli were in the Indian team when the Men in Blue lifted the 2011 ODI World Cup.
