Formula E Chief Backs Fernando Alonso Test Drive as Gen4 Era Approaches

Formula E is really gaining traction, and it just got a big boost from co-founder and chief championship officer Alberto Longo, who extended a warm invitation to Fernando Alonso to think about making the switch. He mentioned that all Alonso has to do is give him a call. Longo’s remarks came after Alonso expressed his interest in Formula E, listing it as one of the racing series that still excites him beyond Formula 1. The upcoming Gen4 car, which boasts four-wheel drive, caught Alonso’s attention as a thrilling development. He also mentioned the World Endurance Championship and the Dakar Rally as other series he’d love to compete in after his F1 career.

Although a move remains unlikely in the near future, Alonso’s interest alone is significant for Formula E. His arrival would bring global attention and fresh audiences to the championship, while his performances would offer a direct benchmark against the existing grid. Longo stressed that arranging a Gen4 test or introducing Alonso to teams would require only a phone call, as he said, “Fernando just needs to call me.  The moment he calls me, I will do whatever is needed to support him with a test or to introduce him to any team. He knows that – we speak a lot every year.”

Pedro de la Rosa believes Fernando Alonso Can Still Match Max Verstappen

The chatter about Alonso’s future has sparked another intriguing debate in the world of Formula 1, can the 44-year-old still go toe-to-toe with Max Verstappen if they were in the same car? Former F1 driver and Aston Martin ambassador Pedro de la Rosa thinks so. Having had the chance to work closely with both Alonso and Lewis Hamilton, as he said, “I’ve worked with Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton, seen their data, and shared the car with them. That’s why I know exactly how exceptional they are. Verstappen is a phenomenon, but I’m convinced that Alonso would be able to match him completely in equal equipment.”

Even though Aston Martin has faced challenges that have left Alonso stuck in the midfield, De la Rosa believes that age hasn’t dulled Alonso’s edge; he adapts to different circuits and conditions with remarkable speed. He acknowledged Verstappen’s impressive streak of three consecutive world titles and his astonishing 19 wins out of 22 races in 2023, yet he firmly believes that Alonso would still be in the mix for victories against the Dutchman in equal machinery. This assertion reignites the age-old debate in Formula 1 about the balance between a driver’s skill and the performance of the car.
