ECB Eyes Experienced Global Names For England Test Coach Role Before Pakistan Series

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is ramping up its efforts to find a new head coach for the Test team, having narrowed down a list of nine candidates from both international and franchise cricket. Notably, several names from the IPL have emerged as strong contenders. This search follows the departure of Brendon McCullum and the retirement of Ben Stokes, leaving England in need of new leadership in red-ball cricket. ECB chief executive Richard Gould is keen to finalize the appointment before England kicks off its home Test series against Pakistan at Headingley on August 19, 2026. With the 2027 Ashes in Australia already on the horizon, the board is on the lookout for an experienced leader who can help rebuild a team that has faced challenges in recent months.

McCullum’s tenure ended on Sunday after England lost seven of their last nine Tests, including a 2-1 home series defeat against New Zealand. The team is also without a permanent captain following Stokes’ decision to retire from international cricket during that series in late June. Speaking to BBC Sport, Gould said, “It will be a targeted selection process. We often do a lot of work in terms of planning as to succession I will always keep a shortlist going of coaches and various other positions and in truth, this position is probably one where the shortlist is no more than six to 10 names globally of a diverse nature.”

IPL Experience And International Success Dominate ECB’s Search

Former England coach Andy Flower is making a strong case to reclaim his old position. The current head coach of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Flower previously led England to the pinnacle of the ICC Test rankings and celebrated three Ashes series victories during his first tenure with the national team. Reports indicate that the ECB is open to working around his IPL commitments if necessary.

Another strong candidate is former Australia coach Justin Langer, who guided Australia to a resounding 4-0 Ashes victory and is currently at the helm of the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL. Kumar Sangakkara, the director of cricket for the Rajasthan Royals and a former Sri Lanka captain, is also a prominent name in the mix, known for his respected leadership and strategic mindset.

The shortlist also features Stephen Fleming, the former coach of the Chennai Super Kings, and Tom Moody, the global director for the Lucknow Super Giants, both of whom bring a wealth of experience from both international and franchise cricket. Jonathan Trott and Richard Dawson are the only former England players in the final lineup; Trott recently took Afghanistan to the semi-finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup, while Dawson successfully led Glamorgan back to Division One cricket. Completing the shortlist are Pakistan’s white-ball coach Mike Hesson and former Ireland coach Adi Birrell. Meanwhile, Rahul Dravid and Andrew Flintoff are not in the running, as the ECB is prioritizing candidates with proven international coaching experience ahead of the upcoming Ashes cycle.
