Deepti Sharma Sets New Women’s T20I Wicket Record During World Cup Opener Against Pakistan

Deepti Sharma once again proved herself worthy of being called India’s No. 1 player in crunch moments. She created yet another historic moment for herself when she played in India’s first match in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. India beat Pakistan by 64 runs after Deepti’s amazing performance in which she took 5/10 against them in Edgbaston. She thus recorded the best bowling figures for an Indian in Women’s T20 World Cup. In addition, she topped the charts of wickets taken in Women’s T20 Internationals. The calmness of the young lady combined with her ability to execute pressure-packed performances helped her achieve this feat.

Her impressive five-wicket figures came at a very crucial point of time in the match. Pakistan had a good start while chasing their target of 171 runs, but the performance of the all-rounder brought down the momentum of the team. Deepti’s spell of bowling took apart the middle order of Pakistan and kept India ahead in the game all along. Consequently, the Indian team defeated Pakistan by dismissing them in 17 overs at a score of 106.

Two Major Records During Deepti Sharma’s Match-Winning Spell

Best Figures for India in Women’s T20Is

Deepti has made history with her incredible bowling figures of 5/10, marking the best performance ever recorded by an Indian woman in T20 Internationals. She has now surpassed Jhulan Goswami’s long-held record of 5/11 against Australia back in 2012. Deepti’s achievement also outshines Renuka Singh Thakur’s 5/15 against England during the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup and Priyanka Roy’s 5/16 against Pakistan in 2009. What’s even more impressive is that Deepti’s performance is the best by any Indian in Women’s T20 World Cup history. In the grand scheme of the tournament, her 5/10 ranks third overall, trailing only Deandra Dottin’s 5/5 in 2018 and Sune Luus’ 5/8 in 2016. Her final over, where she took three wickets, not only clinched the match but also etched her name in the record books.

Most Wickets in Women’s T20Is

The landmark spell also propelled Deepti to the top of the Women’s T20I wicket charts. After the match against Pakistan, she wrapped up with 166 wickets in this format, surpassing Thailand’s Thipatcha Putthawong, who previously held the record with 165. Now, Deepti stands at the forefront globally, ahead of Thipatcha, Rwanda’s Henriette Ishimwe (160), Australia’s Megan Schutt (152), and Thailand’s Onnicha Kamchomphu (148). On top of that, Deepti’s international wicket count has soared to 351 across all formats, just four wickets shy of Jhulan Goswami’s all-time Indian record of 355.
