The defending champion beat Wu Yibing 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 on Friday to book his place in the third round and extend his Grand Slam winning streak to 17 matches. It was another positive step for Alcaraz, who is competing in his first tournament since April after spending nearly five months out with a wrist injury. “To be honest, I’m better than I thought,” Alcaraz said after the win. “Physically I thought I was going to be bad after the first match, but I am recovering really well. I am doing great things off the court to be in a good state.”
Alcaraz also feels his tennis is coming together as the tournament goes on. “Right now, I think my level is really good. I think I have caught the rhythm of the competition,” he said. “Every time that I step on the court I give it all. I’m just trying to improve, be better every match and I think I’m getting there.” The former US Open winner’s next challenge will be to face 20th seeded Tommy Paul. Alcaraz knows that Paul will have home advantage and also admitted, “He’s going to play at home, which is going to be a little bit of an advantage for him.
