After PSL slump, Mohammad Rizwan admits he doesn’t deserve Pakistan selection

A rare instance of candid expression has stirred up the debate on T20 cricket in Pakistan. Captain of the Rawalpindi team, Mohammad Rizwan, who is well regarded as one of the key players in Pakistan’s top-order batting line-up, has admitted doubts regarding his inclusion in the Pakistan team due to his poor performance in the Pakistan Super League 2026. The statistics of this player are proof enough. His scores include just 107 runs in 7 innings, his average score being around 15 with a strike rate of almost 115, which is far below the current requirements of T20 cricket.

His recent performances in other franchise leagues, like the Big Bash, too were less than satisfactory. Under pressure, he has shown the courage to accept responsibility. He stressed that selection must be based on merit, not reputation, and accepted that others may be more deserving right now.

He said, adding that he had conveyed the same sentiment earlier as well, “I don’t deserve a place in the Pakistan team with my current performance.”

Lack of Confidence Showing in Numbers

For starters, Rizwan’s problems have been evident through the level of his output and timing. This has shown itself through a strike rate that has remained at about 115. The average is now also under 25, the lowest that he has ever had over the years. Consequently, he has come under heavy criticism. Clearly, this shows that he is out of rhythm, but it has implications in T20 cricket.

Captaincy Pressure Adds to Burden

In addition, the captain’s role has made things even more complex for Rizwan. As a captain for a losing team looking for its first victory, Rizwan has two hats to wear. It seems that tactical considerations and team mistakes have impacted his batting rhythm. Although he is regarded as a good captain, the additional pressure has contributed to his worst T20 form to date. Consequently, scrutiny has expanded from performance to leadership impact.

His Path Ahead

Mohammad Rizwan despite his lack of form has insisted about a come-back as he said, “My performance is not good. But this does not mean that I will lose hope and sit. Or I will leave cricket. If I have strength, I will do it.”

In spite of the downturn, however, Rizwan has said that he does not feel like retiring from the sport. Instead, this is just a phase in his career, and he was quick to dismiss any suggestion of stopping playing due to failure. On the contrary, he said that hard work and determination have been his reaction to setbacks in the past. Perhaps more significant, however, he was willing to concede space to other players.

In summary, the confession of Rizwan has altered the discussion. It emphasizes the nature of today’s T20 cricket rivalry and the significance of self-evaluation. The results of this openness will show whether there is a reversal or a transitional period for Pakistan.
