The controversy around India’s squad choice became even more heated when India head coach Gautam Gambhir explained the choice to drop Sanju Samson and replace him with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the 18-year-old opener, during the England T20I series. This issue became particularly contentious after India lost the third match against England with an all-time record margin of 125 runs in the T20Is. Gambhir stated that Sanju Samson had been made fully aware of his position despite being axed from both the playing XI and the Zimbabwe tour squad. The wicket-keeper batter was named India’s Player of the Tournament during their victorious defense of the T20 World Cup where he scored undefeated 97, 89 and 89 in the last three games.
According to Gambhir, Sanju Samson was fully briefed on his axing and further stated that, “The clarity that should have been given to Sanju Samson, he has got from me. As far as clarity goes, we are absolutely clear that Sanju. What he had done for India during the World Cup has been phenomenal, and sometimes you just have to look at the form as well of a certain player.”
Gautam Gambhir Flags India’s Adaptability Problem
Gambhir stood by the selection decisions but also acknowledged that India’s main issue has been their struggle to adapt to varying conditions and match scenarios. The team has now faced four consecutive losses in completed T20Is, including a 2-0 series defeat in Ireland and two setbacks against England, especially after the first match of the series was rained out. These recent performances have sparked new doubts about the team’s strategy during this transitional period.
The third T20I loss really highlighted these problems, as India was bowled out for a mere 76 while chasing a target of 202, marking their largest defeat by runs in T20 internationals. Gambhir noted that the current squad is quite different from the one that clinched the T20 World Cup earlier this year, with many seasoned players absent and younger talents stepping into more significant roles. He emphasized that while winning is crucial, it’s also important to rebuild the team and give new players the time they need to adjust to the international stage.
