5 names who became face of their IPL franchises

Many stars have emerged from the Indian Premier League, but only a select few have managed to emerge bigger than the scorecard and become a personality that is synonymous with their franchise teams. Players such as Virat Kohli for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, MS Dhoni for Chennai Super Kings, Rohit Sharma for Mumbai Indians, Sunil Narine for Kolkata Knight Riders, and David Warner for Sunrisers Hyderabad have made history with their achievements on the field. They helped shape the culture of their teams and left a legacy behind. In addition, their contribution to cricket helped make these teams iconic within the IPL.

These players have shown the ability to handle pressure over many seasons and meet expectations year after year. While some helped create dynasties by serving as captains, others did so purely by performing at the level expected. Regardless, all of them were able to create a bond with fans beyond their statistics.

1. Virat Kohli – Royal Challengers Bengaluru

Virat Kohli is the most potent player-franchise brand in the history of IPL. Since making his debut for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2008, he has never played for any other IPL team. The unprecedented commitment saw him become the face of the Bengaluru franchise. Kohli was also the top run-scorer in IPL after racking up 9,218 runs in 281 games.

The performance during the 2016 season is considered one of the best T20 seasons of all time. Kohli scored 973 runs and four hundreds in the process guiding RCB to the final match. In addition, Kohli also won an Orange Cap in 2024. On top of that, Kohli made some of the most famous IPL pairs with AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle. It took Kohli many years of almost winning but eventually got the first IPL title in 2025.

2. MS Dhoni – Chennai Super Kings

The captaincy prowess of MS Dhoni turned Chennai Super Kings into the most consistent cricket team in history. He is fondly known by fans from all over India as โ€˜Thalaโ€™ ever since he took charge in 2008.

Under his captaincy, Chennai won five IPL championships and two Champions League T20 cups. His CSK side qualified for the playoffs a total of twelve times and reached ten finals in its initial fourteen seasons. In addition, he leads the list of captains having participated in 226 IPL matches. Besides his leadership skills, he also proved himself as an efficient finisher with 5,439 runs and a strike rate of 137.45. He took more than 200 wickets behind the stumps too.

3. Rohit Sharma – Mumbai Indians

It was Rohit Sharma who made Mumbai Indians the most dominant team of the Indian Premier League. Before he took charge as their captain halfway during the year 2013, MI had never won the competition. However, under his leadership, the team went on to win five IPL trophies.

Apart from making the right tactical calls and handling players, Rohit Sharma was also consistent in delivering runs, hitting as many as 300 sixes in his 7,329 runs in the tournament. His leadership brilliance extended even to the knockout stages, where his team always performed exceptionally well. Despite stepping down as their captain for the 2024 edition of the league, Rohit Sharma is still the most recognizable name at MI.

4. Gautam Gambhir – Kolkata Knight Riders

Gautam Gambhir made a massive impact on Kolkata Knight Riders right from the moment he joined the team in 2011. Prior to his appointment as captain, the franchise did not make it to the playoff stage in any of its initial three seasons of participation in the IPL.

He brought success to his franchise by leading KKR to their first and second titles in 2012 and 2014 respectively. He also came back to lead the team again in the 2024 season when KKR won their third IPL trophy. As a result of playing for KKR, he amassed a total of 3,345 runs to become the highest run scorer for this franchise till date.
