Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur spent heavily in the last two transfer windows and signed the likes of Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso, Gedson Fernandes and Steven Bergwijn. Despite the raft of new signings, the north London outfit have struggled for consistency in the Premier League this season as they presently find themselves in eighth spot, seven points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea.
The Premier League is expected to resume in June and Tottenham Hotspur will be hoping to turn around their season. Lack of form and injuries to key players have halted Spurs’ progress, but with Harry Kane expected to return to action soon, Jose Mourinho’s team will be looking to bounce back and seal European qualification.
However, clubs should look beyond this season too as in the post-COVID-19 era, the transfer market is expected to be more competitive and big-money signings are less likely. With Jose Mourinho at the helm, Tottenham Hotspur are expected to make a few shrewd signings.
Here are three realistic signings for Tottenham Hotspur in the upcoming transfer window.
#1 Thomas Meunier
Paris Saint-Germain’s right-back Thomas Meunier has been linked with a move away from the French champions for quite some time now. The 28-year-old, who will be a free agent at the end of the season, is wanted by several clubs across Europe, including Tottenham Hotspur.
According to reports, Meunier’s situation at PSG is being observed by Spurs, Borussia Dortmund, Napoli and Manchester United. However, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka firmly establishing himself at Old Trafford, Meunier is unlikely to make his move to Manchester.Â
With Kieran Trippier moving to Atletico Madrid last summer, Tottenham Hotspur are only left with Serge Aurier as a senior right-back as they look to strengthen the position. And it has been claimed that Jose Mourinho has contacted Meunier to try and convince him to join Spurs.
The Belgian international made 27 appearances in all competitions for PSG in the 2019-20 season. But with uncertainty surrounding his future at Parc des Princes, Tottenham can take advantage of the situation swoop for him at the end of the season.
#2 Zeki Celik
LOSC Lille signed Zeki Celik from Turkish outfit Istanbulspor in the summer of 2018, with the full-back going on to establish himself as a vital member of the Ligue 1 team. In the 2019-20 season, Celik had 2.23 tackles and 1.4 clearances in 23 league appearances. His impressive performances have caught the attention of Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho.
It is believed that Mourinho is set to test his relationship with Lille director of football Luis Campos, who worked with the Portuguese at Real Madrid. Mourinho was even seen in the stands at Lille alongside Campos after he was sacked by Manchester United.
With Tottenham seriously lacking options at the right-back spot, it would come as no surprise if they seriously make a move for Celik at the end of the season.
However, it remains to be seen if the Turkish international is interested in playing for Spurs, who might miss out on Champions League football next season.
#3 Willian
Willian, whose present contract with Chelsea is due to expire at the end of the season, has been linked with leaving Stamford Bridge, with Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal interested in roping him in.
Willian infamously signed for Chelsea from Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala in 2013, despite having his medical at Tottenham Hotspur. However, the Brazilian could finally be seen in a Tottenham shirt, especially as he has previously played under Jose Mourinho during his time at Chelsea.
The Blues still want Willian and are willing to offer him a two-year contract, but the winger is holding out for a three-year deal. Mourinho shares an excellent relationship Willian and could play a decisive role in bringing him to Tottenham.Â
A reunion with Mourinho is definitely on the cards for Willian, who has scored five times and provided as many assists in 28 Premier League appearances this season.
