Mumbai Indians have announced that Lasith Malinga, Paras Mhambrey and Carl Hopkinson will be moving on from their respective roles in the franchise’s men’s team coaching setup, bringing an end to their association with the five-time IPL champions.
The franchise confirmed the development on Thursday, expressing gratitude to all three coaches for their commitment, contributions and service to the Mumbai Indians family.
Malinga, one of the most iconic figures in Mumbai Indians’ history, has enjoyed a remarkable association with the franchise. The former Sri Lankan fast bowler was instrumental in MI’s bowling attack during his playing career, playing a defining role in four IPL title-winning campaigns and the team’s Champions League T20 triumph in 2011.
After retiring from playing, Malinga returned to the franchise in a coaching and mentoring capacity, continuing to contribute to the development of its bowling unit. His experience, competitive spirit and understanding of the game made him an influential figure within the setup.
Paras Mhambrey also leaves after two spells with Mumbai Indians. He was associated with the franchise from 2010 to 2017 before returning in 2024. Over the years, Mhambrey played an important role in nurturing bowling talent and bringing valuable experience to the team’s coaching structure.
Meanwhile, Carl Hopkinson joined Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2025 season. Having previously worked with the England men’s team, Hopkinson brought considerable international experience to the franchise, with a focus on improving the side’s fielding standards.
Mumbai Indians thanked all three coaches for their contributions, highlighting the relationships they built and the memories they created during their time with the franchise.
The departures mark a significant change to Mumbai Indians’ coaching setup as the franchise looks ahead to the next chapter. With IPL 2027 approaching, attention will now turn to how the team reshapes its support staff and prepares for the upcoming season.
