KKR emerged as the highest-valued IPL franchise despite Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings winning more IPL trophies. The Shah Rukh Khan-backed side leads the valuation chart with a range of ₹19,200 crore to ₹22,500 crore. Mumbai Indians are valued between ₹18,400 crore and ₹21,700 crore, while Chennai Super Kings stand between ₹18,400 crore and ₹20,700 crore. Royal Challengers Bengaluru, another major commercial force, are valued at ₹16,700 crore.

The report credits KKR’s strong sponsorship pull and brand recall for the jump. The franchise was bought in 2008 for around ₹300 crore. Over 18 IPL seasons, its valuation has seen annual growth of nearly 26-27 percent. Hurun described this rise as “infrastructure-grade asset appreciation,” showing how sports franchises are now viewed as long-term business assets rather than only cricket teams.

KKR’s Global Teams Boost Brand Value

One of the main reasons for the success of KKR includes their global network of cricketing teams. While most IPL franchises were concentrating exclusively on playing in the IPL, KKR decided to venture into international leagues at an earlier point in time than other franchises. The franchise currently owns three teams – Trinbago Knight Riders (Caribbean Premier League), Abu Dhabi Knight Riders (ILT20), and Los Angeles Knight Riders (Major League Cricket).

As far as the success factors of the franchise, this global model contributed significantly to expanding its commercial presence as well as reach to fans. This was termed as “Global Cricket Portfolio Breadth” by the Hurun report. Such a model helped the franchise in creating business outside the IPL period.

KKR Balances Cricket Success and Business Growth

KKR’s financial success was also facilitated by constant victories on the field. Indeed, they achieved three wins in the IPL tournaments, with their latest victory coming in 2024. Though they fall behind Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, which have secured five IPL trophies, KKR managed to merge successful results in playing the game with profitable financial operations. In addition, the popularity of Shah Rukh Khan helped develop the brand further. Overall, KKR ranked highly in terms of fans’ engagement and sponsorships. In total, IPL teams now attract over 100 million followers on Instagram.

In regard to players, the highest earner is Virat Kohli, who earned a sum of ₹230.2 crore throughout his 18 seasons in the tournament. Next, comes Rohit Sharma, with earnings amounting to ₹227.2 crore, whereas MS Dhoni ranks third with ₹200.3 crore. It should be mentioned that the overall income of IPL players exceeds ₹6,341 crore, making the league one of the most lucrative sporting arenas in the world.
