“That Was the Best Moment of My Life” – Nikhil Chaudhary After Australia Debut

For Nikhil Chaudhary, the journey from playing cricket in Punjab to donning Australia’s national colours has truly come full circle. The India-born all-rounder described his international debut as the “best moment of my life” after making history during Australia’s T20I series against Bangladesh in June 2026. He became the first male cricketer born in India to represent Australia in over sixty years. His ascent followed a stellar BBL 2025-26 season with the Hobart Hurricanes, where he racked up 307 runs in 12 matches, proving himself as a reliable middle-order player. This call-up capped off an incredible journey that began with a holiday trip to Australia in 2020, which unexpectedly turned into a permanent move and ultimately led to this international opportunity.

Speaking about playing for Australia he said, “We always dream of playing for Australia and it actually happened yesterday. With this gun crew, I was a bit confident about actually going into the field and after that first catch, I was even more confident that I can actually do something on the international stage.”

At 30 years old, he learned about his selection while playing cricket in Belgium. Initially, he was named outside the touring squad, but he got his shot when Travis Head took leave from the Bangladesh tour. Chaudhary later shared that finding out about his debut just before the opening match filled him with both excitement and nerves. However, an early catch in the field helped him settle in quickly and gave his confidence a nice boost on the international stage.

Nikhil Chaudhary’s Debut Series Against Bangladesh

Chaudhary made quite the splash in his debut T20I at Chattogram. He snagged a brilliant catch in the outfield, took his first international wicket, and chipped in with a crucial 18 runs off 13 balls during Australia’s successful chase. His efforts played a key role in helping Australia clinch a four-wicket victory, giving the newcomer a promising start.

Throughout the three-match series, Chaudhary was a consistent presence as a batting all-rounder. He racked up 26 runs at an impressive strike rate of 136.84 and took two wickets while keeping his economy rate at 6.86. He also wrapped up the series with three catches to his name. In the second match, he contributed eight runs and bowled a solid over. Although he didn’t get to bat in the final game, he made his mark with the ball, finishing with figures of 1 for 27 from four overs.

In the meantime, Chaudhary praised senior leg-spinner Adam Zampa for his guidance in adjusting to the international cricket scene. He mentioned that “I keep asking him (Zampa) a lot of questions because obviously, in the initial stages, you have to ask a lot of questions to the seniors. He just got 150 T20 wickets, which is not an easy thing to do, especially nowadays because T20 is more of a batter’s format now.”

Reflecting on his journey, Chaudhary noted that juggling different jobs while chasing his cricket aspirations has taught him how to stay composed when the pressure is on.
