T Dilip explains what he wants to bring to Mumbai Indians Dressing Room

Mumbai Indians have brought in one of India’s most successful recent fielding coaches, and T. Dilip wasted no time making his intentions clear. In a video shared by the franchise on 30 October, the new fielding coach spoke with quiet conviction about what he wants to achieve at the five-time champions. He also explained that great fielding is rarely about the spectacular catches and run-outs that make highlight reels.

“The Mumbai badge is a privilege as well as a responsibility,” Dilip said, wearing the light-blue MI jersey. As a Mumbai Indians team, I want to build fielding as an attacking weapon in the field.” he said.

He also believes that the real difference comes from the 1% factors which are the small, consistent efforts that swing matches. “Once players recognise that it’s not the spectacular highlights which are highlighted, but the 1% factors which can impact a game, then automatically they will put in those efforts.” he added.

Dilip also made it clear that he wants practice sessions and match days to feel enjoyable. “We create that environment where players having fun on the field, enjoy the field, and go out there. Sometimes you may have a bad day in your primary skills, whether batting or bowling, but still you can impact a game through fielding.” he said.

While he already knows several MI players including Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Tilak Varma and others from his time with Team India, he was clear that familiarity only gets you through the door. “Acquaintance helps you to come into the dressing room, but to earn that place, it’s an everyday work.” he added.

On the popular fielding medal he introduced with India, Dilip said he is open to new ideas at MI. He will first understand the head coach’s philosophy and existing traditions before deciding what fits best. After helping India win two T20 World Cups and the Champions Trophy, Dilip now turns his attention to the Mumbai Indians.
