Rohit Sharma in IPL 2019 is undoubtedly one of the most intriguing characters in the sport today. Not since David Gower or Mark Waugh has one made the art of crafty, technical batting look so easy. But as seen in the 2019 edition of the IPL, Rohit Sharma, hasn’t been in the best of forms.
But as seen a few hours ago, in the contest against CSK, the right-hander was back to his best. In striking a fantastic 48-ball-67, the Mumbai Indians captain seemed in the thick of things. In reducing Chennai to thin shreds of paper, Rohit’s batting, it seemed had opened the floodgates for Mumbai Indians.
A fantastic fifty, his first of the 2019 edition of the IPL, and his 35th overall took Rohit to clinch yet another man-of-the-match performance. And this, as it turned out to be, is a record most would envy and many would love to scale.
In an innings that perhaps essayed a near-perfect combination of control and firepower, Sharma struck 6 fours and 3 sixes.
But most importantly, Sharma’s belligerent knock- that came at a strike rate of 139- meant that he did something that would take him ahead of stalwarts like MS Dhoni.
Interestingly, Sharma’s decisive fifty that saw MI beat CSK by a comprehensive margin of 46 runs- not always does one see Chennai been pillaged like that- also took him post-Yusuf Pathan.
So, what is it and why is Rohit Sharma’s feat deserving of the praise it is getting?
Apparently, in claiming his 17th man-of-the-match award, Rohit Sharma has now topped the list of most winners of the prestigious honor.
The past table-toppers happen to be legends like ‘Thala’ MS Dhoni, CSK’s former captain and their most enigmatic player, if one may put it that way.
But more on the significance of the inning. For someone who’s led the Mumbai Indians to bag multiple IPL titles, Rohit’s captaincy is about as interesting as his batting.
When not in form, he’d not take a second to admit his lackings and here’s a leader who puts others ahead of him. But there’s more to this eternal fan-favorite, isn’t it?
It’s hard to imagine the team having an out-of-form batsman in its inspirational leader, someone under whose watchful guidance, names like Krunal, Hardik, Mumbai Indians’ own “KP” Kieron Pollard have risen to be the forces they are today.
Why this knock was important for Rohit, something even his contemporaries would note, was that the Mumbai- batsman was failing to convert the starts into meaningful scores.
It’s not that Sharma hadn’t gone off to fliers previously. With such scores as the 48 against the RCB, the 30 versus Delhi, the 47 against Rajasthan, and another 28 against RCB, the man with IPL’s most MOM awards did demonstrate familiar class, if not the ability to take those to successful conclusions.
One reckons, Mumbai would love to have their skipper continue the solid form he finally has shown, having taken a giant leap toward booking its berth in the playoffs.
