Lionel Messi will be available for Inter Miami’s match against the New England Revolution this weekend, even after picking up his fifth yellow card of the MLS regular season. The booking came during Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with FC Cincinnati.
This card would normally have triggered an automatic one-game suspension under standard accumulation rules. Instead, a little-known league provision known as the Good Behavior Incentive has kept the Argentine star clear to play.
In most competitions around the world, five yellow cards in a season mean a player sits out the next match but MLS operates differently. The league’s official competition guidelines include a mechanism that rewards sustained clean play.
A player who plays five consecutive matches without receiving a yellow card, a red card, or any supplemental discipline has one yellow automatically deducted from their accumulation total. The incentive can be applied a maximum of three times during the regular season, and a player’s tally cannot fall below zero.
Lionel Messi gets suspension relief after yellow card against Cincinnati
Lionel Messi has already benefited from the rule twice this campaign. He completed one qualifying stretch of five or more matches without a booking after an earlier yellow, and later went on an even longer run of ten appearances without being cautioned. Those two deductions reduced his effective total from five on-pitch bookings to three. The latest yellow against Cincinnati therefore left him short of the suspension limit.
The cards themselves remain on his disciplinary record, but they no longer count toward the number that forces a ban. The rule has been part of MLS since 2016 and applies equally to every player. Messi has been central to Inter Miami this season, contributing heavily in goals and assists as the club pushes for a strong finish and a favorable playoff position.
Missing him against New England would have been a significant blow at a stage when every point matters. Instead, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner remains eligible and is expected to feature in that match.
