The sprint at the Miami Grand Prix caused a dramatic turn of events for the 2026 Formula 1 season. Starting from pole, Lando Norris remained in command throughout the race, taking all laps until crossing the line first ahead of his McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc rounded up the podium while the victory by McLaren put an end to the season opening dominance of Mercedes. The 19-lap sprint at the Miami International Autodrome was clean at the front but tense behind, with position battles, penalties, and strategy calls shaping the final order.
In terms of McLaren’s performance, the team made a significant leap forward after starting the season off slowly. This was attributed to improvements implemented in their car which proved successful as Norris managed to secure pole and ultimately win the sprint race.
Lando Norris after winning the 19-lap sprint at Miami, said, “A good day for us… I was still pushing, trying to find that balance… A good start to the weekend, but now I have to do it all over again.”
Mercedes hit trouble
Challenges came from the outset for Mercedes. Once more, Kimi Antonelli found himself losing positions from the very start, falling from second place all the way to fourth. While he fought back, he kept making costly mistakes. Numerous track limits violations resulted in a five-second penalty that took him from fourth down to sixth.
In contrast, George Russell took advantage of this and climbed up into fourth spot through consistency at the end. The outcome was a minor dent in Antonelli’s championship lead, but Mercedes still could not match their earlier form during the season.
Norris stays in control
Norris was in charge of his opening stint and steadily opened up a lead without making errors in extreme heat conditions. There were no threats from Piastri after Turn 1. The latter tried his best to catch Norris but ended up trailing by nearly four seconds.
Meanwhile, Leclerc managed a challenge towards the end of the race but ended up losing control and finished third. Following them was an aggressive fight between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, involving even wheel-to-wheel racing and a mandatory change of positions. In the end, Verstappen emerged victorious. For Norris, this win came at a critical time – it was the first win of the season and ended Mercedes’ winning streak.
Focus shifts to main race
Let us now shift our attention to the Grand Prix on Sunday. McLaren seems to be quite strong in both one-lap and race pace, but it is about the ability to maintain the form for a much longer distance that needs to be determined.
On the other hand, Mercedes must resolve issues related to starts and avoid making any mistakes. Antonelli was quite upset after the sprint race, admitting his mistakes. Ferrari remains in the race but cannot put up a fight for the victory.
