Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have experienced an unexpected twist mid-season as South African batter Matthew Breetzke left IPL 2026 due to personal reasons. This 27-year-old player flew back home due to mourning on his wife’s side. On the other hand, the Lucknow team got some good news as Josh Inglis, an Australian wicketkeeper-batter, is finally available after returning from marriage leave. While one player has quietly left the team, another one is set to join LSG and save their losing streak.
Even though Breetzke was known for his performance in franchise leagues in South Africa, the Lucknow Super Giants failed to utilize his services in IPL 2026. The South African batter has developed a reputation due to his impressive career in T20 cricket. Over the years, Breetzke proved his worth in the SA20 where he managed to score more than 900 runs with a good average. His ability to adapt across formats made him a valuable squad option, even though he did not feature in IPL 2026 matches.
Jos Inglis Walks Into Opportunity Amidst LSG’s Crisis
The overseas batting group of LSG has not performed well this season. Nicholas Pooran has done extremely poorly, whereas Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh have not been consistent. This has provided an opportunity for Inglis. Inglis is coming on top of all his achievements. Inglis made a score of 278 in just 11 innings last year with a strike rate over 160. Inglis has started training with the side. Since Breetzke cannot participate and other players are also not in good form, Inglis will definitely take their place in the playing XI. His aggressive style could bring balance to a fragile middle order.
Also, LSG spent INR 8.60 crores for Inglis last year even though he was available only for a short time. However, now LSG can see some returns from him.
LSG’s Season On The Line
LSG’s campaign is now in jeopardy. The team currently finds itself at the bottom of the table, having won only two out of eight games played. The next game features Mumbai Indians, another poor-performing team. The upcoming fixtures look tough for LSG. The team faces another clash with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, followed by one against the Chennai Super Kings. All three fixtures could determine how well LSG performs in this season. A couple of losses could spell the end of their season.
The current team has no option but to act fast. The batting department continues to struggle while the bowlers fail to deliver in important matches. Given that LSG has fewer games in hand, time is running out for them. Moreover, Inglis’ presence in the squad becomes more critical now.
