Martin Brundle is known for his strong statements. Talking ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, the Sky Sports commentator said Carlos Sainz has driven himself into a dead end at Williams. It was a harsh but fair criticism. Sainz is 31 and his contract runs out at the end of this season, and Williams are currently ninth in the constructors championship with just 11 points. The car that looked promising last year has been left behind under the new regulations, and even Aston Martin has overtaken them.
“He’s stalling out at a time in his career and life that is not optimal, to say the least,” Brundle said. “I think he’s ended up down a cul-de-sac here.”
Sainz arrived at Williams for 2025 after Ferrari moved on with Hamilton. At the time he turned down the Sauber/Audi seat, something Brundle reckons went against what his father wanted. It looked like a smart call in 2025 when he finished with two podiums and a solid fifth-place finish for the team. This year has been a different story.
Brundle gave him credit for committing properly by not going with Audi. “He really committed to it, didn’t he? He decided not to go to Audi, which I believe his dad wanted him to. So I would imagine Carlos is keeping his options open.”

Williams boss James Vowles has said that they want to keep him and can still make it work. But with the summer break here and some poor results, Sainz is clearly weighing everything up. The interesting twist is that Audi, the team he once rejected, is being mentioned again as a possible destination for 2027. Audi’s F1 project is finding its feet, and expected to improve, and the family connection is still there. Other seats could open depending on what happens at the front of the grid.
For a driver who’s already won races in a Ferrari and consistently performed wherever he has been, the next choice matters. Another year of midfield grind at this stage of his career would be hard to take for Sainz. He put his faith in Williams, and right now it’s left him stuck. Whether the team can turn the car around or whether he starts looking elsewhere will decide the next chapter for Sainz.
