As La Liga returned after a break of three months due to coronavirus pandemic, the football on show was much better than what people expected.
All the 10 games saw goals and there were no major injuries reported as such.
Barcelona and Real Madrid won their respective matches against Mallorca and Eibar to keep the title race enticing, while Atletico Madrid’s struggles continued as Los Rojiblancos played out a 1-1 draw with Athletic Bilbao.
Without further ado, here’s our La Liga Team of the Week for gameweek 28. We will use the 4-1-4-1 formation.
Goalkeeper: Marc-Andre ter Stegen (Barcelona)Â
The German shot-stopper looked in fine form against a relatively toothless Mallorca side as Barcelona comfortably won the game 4-0 to remain two points clear at the top of the La Liga table.
Marc-Andre ter Stegen did well when required, making three saves during the game.
The German international, who has made 27 league appearances so far this campaign, kept his ninth clean sheet over the weekend.Â
Left-back: Jordi Alba (Barcelona)
The Barcelona full-back was at his devastating best as his tireless running and pinpoint passing made Mallorca clueless.
The Spanish international scored a goal, provided one assist and helped his side keep a clean sheet, while also managing to play the third-highest number of passes in the game (66).
However, Jordi Alba’s joy was cut short by a 73rd-minute yellow card which will see him miss the next game as this was his fifth booking of the La Liga campaign.Â
Centre-back: Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid)
The Real Madrid captain is on his way to his highest goalscoring season ever.
Sergio Ramos has made 26 La Liga appearances so far this campaign, with the centre-back scoring his sixth league goal of the season in a comfortable 3-1 win over Eibar on Sunday.
The Spanish international was at his commanding best at Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano, and if not for a deflected Eibar effort which bulged the net, he would have helped his side keep yet another clean sheet.Â
Centre-back: Bernardo Espinosa (Espanyol)
The Columbian defender, who is on loan from Girona, has definitely been one of the shining lights for Espanyol who are otherwise having a dismal campaign as they sit at the bottom of the table.
The centre-back had his best performance of the season in Espanyol’s 2-0 win over Alaves as he scored his third goal and also helped his side keep their third clean sheet of the campaign.
The victory didn’t help change Espanyol’s league position but has given the Catalan side something to build upon.Â
Right-back: Javi Lopez (Espanyol)
The inclusion of two defenders from bottom-placed Espanyol in our La Liga Team of the Week might come as a surprise to many but the duo thoroughly deserved it.
Javi Lopez had a great game defensively as he recorded the most tackles won in the game (4). The 34-year full-back was crucial to Espanyol keeping a clean sheet last weekend.
Defensive midfielder: Fernando (Sevilla)
The former Manchester City man, who was solid in the middle of the park in Sevilla’s 2-0 win over Real Betis, also scored a goal from a corner which was flicked on his head by Lucas Ocampos.
Fernando has made 25 league appearances so far this season, scoring two goals and providing as many assists.
Central midfielder: Toni Kroos (Real Madrid)
The Real Madrid midfield maestro just needed 182 seconds to score the opening goal for his team against Eibar.
It was Toni Kroos’ fourth goal of the campaign, in addition to his five assists in 25 La Liga appearances.
The German midfielder dictated the flow of the game and managed to play the second-highest number of passes in the game (58).
Central midfielder: Arturo Vidal (Barcelona)
It was not even 90 seconds on the clock when Arturo Vidal opened the scoring for Barcelona against Mallorca with his seventh goal of the season.
The Chilean midfielder placed his header with perfection from a Jordi Alba cross as he gave the goalkeeper no chance to stop it. In addition to his seven goals in 23 La Liga appearances this season, Vidal has also contributed with two assists.
Right-wing: Lionel Messi (Barcelona)
It was business as usual for the six-time Ballon d’Or winner as he totally decimated Mallorca on Sunday.
Lionel Messi scored once and assisted twice as Barcelona comprehensively won 4-0.
The Argentine was everywhere on the field and was constantly trying to find Martin Braithwaite and Antoine Griezmann with his forward passes.
In 23Â league appearances this season, Messi has scored 20 goals and provided 14 assists, leading the charts in both departments.Â
Left-wing: Lucas Ocampos (Sevilla)
Lucas Ocampos has taken La Liga by storm since signing for Sevilla from Marseille last summer.
The winger, who is a tireless runner and is also known for his timely tackles, was in full flow in the 2-0 derby win over Real Betis.
The Argentine scored the opening goal and provided a mind-blowing back-heel assist for Sevilla’s second.
The former Marseille man also made the second-highest number of tackles for his team (2).
Ocampos has made 23 La Liga appearances so far this season, netting 11 times and setting up three more.
Striker: Wu Lei (Espanyol)Â
Wu Lei, who is considered to be one of the best-ever players from China, is enjoying his first full season in La Liga after appearing in a bit part role last campaign; he moved to Espanyol from Shanghai SIPG in January 2019.
The 28-year-old scored his fourth league goal of the season against Alaves as his team recorded a 2-0 victory and earned three vital points.Â
Here’s how our La Liga Team of the Week for gameweek 28 would line up.
