La Liga gameweek 38 results:
Without further ado, let’s take a look at our La Liga Team of the Week for gameweek 38. The formation used is 4-2-3-1.
Goalkeeper: Andres Fernandez (Villarreal)
Andres Fernandez, the back-up goalkeeper of Villarreal, was given a rare start by the Yellow Submarine in their final match of the season against Eibar. The former Granada shot-stopper had a great game as he provided an assist, kept a clean sheet, managed the highest number of saves (3) and recoveries (13) in the match, which Villarreal won 4-0.
Right-back: Coke (Levante)
Coke has been a decent player for Levante, whose late revival saw them finish 12th on the La Liga table. The former Sevilla right-back scored a late winner and helped keep a clean sheet as Levante beat Getafe 1-0 to end their hopes of Europa League qualification.
Centre-back: Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid)
Despite being a centre-back, Sergio Ramos enjoyed a great season in front of goal. The Spaniard scored the opening goal against Leganes but couldn’t help Real Madrid to another victory as the game ended in a 2-2 draw. It was Ramos’ 11th La Liga goal of the campaign.
Centre-back: Pau Torres (Villarreal)
Paul Torres has been one of the most consistent central defenders in the league this season. The Spanish international was rock solid against Eibar and helped Villarreal to a 4-0 victory. The former Málaga man helped keep a clean sheet and managed to play the highest number of passes in the game (84).
Left-back: Jordi Alba (Barcelona)
Jordi Alba was simply sensational as the Spanish left-back destroyed Alaves with his attacking performance. The full-back provided two assists, helped keep a clean sheet and managed the highest number of passes (93) in the game as the Catalan giants won 5-0.
Defensive midfielder: Andre Zambo Anguissa (Villarreal)
Andre Zambo Anguissa, on loan from Championship side Fulham, has been a mainstay in the Villarreal side, who finished fifth in La Liga. The Cameroon international was at the heart of everything the Yellow Submarine did in their 4-0 win over Eibar. The former Marseille man scored the opening goal of the game, managed the highest number of tackles (3) and take-ons (5) in the game.
Defensive midfielder: Riqui Puig (Barcelona)
Riqui Puig is considered to be one of the best talents to come out of La Masia in the last 10 years. The young Spaniard reminded everyone of his talents as he completely dominated the midfield in Barcelona’s 5-0 win over Alaves. The La Masia graduate scored a goal and provided two assists as he made a strong case to start in the Barcelona midfield next season.
Attacking midfielder: Isco (Real Madrid)
Isco, who has struggled for game time this season, was on top of his game as he dictated the midfield against Leganes with the highest number of passes (85) and take-ons (3). The Spaniard also provided two assists in the 2-2 draw as Leganes were relegated.
Right-winger: Lionel Messi (Barcelona)
It was business as usual for Lionel Messi in Barcelona’s final La Liga game of the season. After the disappointment of losing the title race to arch-rivals, Real Madrid, the Argentine was at his best in the 5-0 rout of Alaves. Messi, who won the La Liga Golden Boot yet again after finding the back of the net 25 times, scored a brace and provided an assist against Alaves.
Left-winger: Antonio Puertas (Granada)
Antonio Puertas has been one of the vital cogs in a Granada side, who defied all odds to qualify for the Europa League next season. The Spaniard was at the heart of every Granada attack against Athletic Bilbao, as he scored a goal and provided an assist in a comprehensive 4-0 victory.
Striker: Gerard Moreno (Villarreal)
Gerard Moreno was in sublime form as he scored a brace and helped Villarreal to a comfortable 4-0 win over Eibar. The brace took Moreno’s tally to 18 goals in the recently-concluded La Liga campaign.
