La Liga is all set to resume on Thursday with third-placed Sevilla taking on Real Betis.
It was earlier suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic and is the second of the top five European leagues to restart after the Bundesliga, which kicked off last month.Â
Notably, 27 gameweeks of La Liga have already been played and there are 11 more rounds to follow which will be held behind closed doors.
Champions Barcelona lead the proceedings and are just a place and two points ahead of their arch-rivals, Real Madrid.
Meanwhile, five clubs are fighting for two remaining UEFA Champions League spots.
The likes of Sevilla, Real Sociedad, Getafe, Atletico Madrid and Valencia are all in the race to qualify for Europe’s premium competition next season.
At the other end of the table, Espanyol are on the verge of being relegated with just four wins this campaign.Â
Ahead of the league’s resumption, let’s take a look at La Liga records which can be broken this season.
#1 Messi could become first player to score 450 La Liga goals
Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi has 438 La Liga goals to his name. The Argentine has been in superb form this season, netting 19 goals in just 22 league games – the highest in the division.
Messi needs 12 more goals to become the first player in La Liga history to find the back of the net 450 times. Notably, he is the only player with 400-plus goals in the league’s history.
#2 Messi could win the Pichichi Trophy for the seventh time
As mentioned above, the Argentine leads the goalscoring charts with 19 goals and is likely to finish the season at the top spot.
Lionel Messi, who has previously won six La Liga Golden Boots, could claim his fourth Pichichi Trophy on the trot, having finished as the top scorer in the league for the past three seasons.
#3 Benzema, Suarez and Griezmann on the verge of achieving personal feats
Real Madrid ace Karim Benzema has amassed a total of 162 league goals in 338 matches and is tied with former Barcelona striker Samuel Eto’o.
Benzema needs one more goal to surpass Eto’o’s tally and become the 12th-highest goalscorer in La Liga history.
Meanwhile, Luis Suarez and Antoine Griezmann have 142 goals each in the league.
The Barcelona duo need eight more goals apiece to reach the 150 mark. Only 16 players have scored 150-plus goals in the Spanish top-flight.
#4 Barcelona eyeing third straight league triumph for third time
Barcelona have 58 points from 27 matches and if they end the season well, they could pocket their 27th league title.
The Catalan giants could lift their third straight La Liga title for the third time in the league’s history. Earlier, they achieved the feat twice between 1991-93 and 2009-2011.
#Espanyol looking to avoid their fifth relegation from La Liga
Espanyol are rooted at the bottom of the table and could be relegated.
The Barcelona-based club have been in Spain’s top division on 85 occasions out of 89 times in total.
This could well be the fifth occasion when Espanyol face relegation from La Liga. The last time they were relegated was in 1992-93 as they had finished 18th that season.
