The inaugural season of the Sher-e-Punjab T20 League kicked off on Sunday, August 20 with the Amritsar Soormas suffering a five-wicket loss to the Mohali Kings at the I.S. Bindra Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali. On Day 2 of the tournament, the Fazilka Falcons kicked off their campaign with an eight-wicket win over the Jalandhar Warriors in the afternoon. In the evening, the Bhatinda Royals were up against the Mohali Kings on the same day. Notably, the tournament is headlined by several national sensations including Abhishek Sharma, Arshdeep Singh, and India’s ODI and Test Captain, Shubman Gill.
Gill was named the captain of the Falcons, but didn’t take on the field during their season opener against the Warriors. Though the star batter was seen cheering for his team, he is yet to play a game in the state league. Notably, Gill was recently a part of the Test team which recorded a 1-0 win over Sri Lanka in a crucial World Test Championship (WTC) series. However, he is expected to join the team soon and represent the side in the newly-launched league.
Shubman Gill Designs Fazilka Falcons Sher-e-Punjab T20 Jersey
The Indian cricket captain designed the jersey of the Fazilka-based team, and was launched by his father, Lakhwinder Singh Gill in Chandigarh ahead of the tournament on National Sports Day. The design of the jersey draws inspiration from Punjab’s culture and traditions while giving it a modern touch. While the cricketer wasn’t himself present at the unveiling, his touch in the jersey made the event more memorable. The team owner, Khushpreet Singh Aulakh spoke during the launch and said that Gill designing it made it even more special.
“Today is a very special occasion for Fazilka Falcons and for everyone associated with the team. Having Shubman Gill personally design the jersey makes it even more meaningful because it brings together cricket and the rich culture of Punjab. The design reflects the pride, traditions and spirit of our state, while also giving the team a strong identity of its own,” he said.
