India’s Oldest First-Time T20I Captains: Where Does Shreyas Iyer Stand?

India’s T20I captaincy has typically been entrusted to seasoned cricketers, but only a select few have taken the reins for the first time after hitting the big 3-0. Shikhar Dhawan, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Rohit Sharma, and KL Rahul are the top five oldest players to make their T20I captaincy debut for India. The latest to join this exclusive club is Shreyas Iyer, who made his debut as captain against Ireland on June 26, 2026, landing him in third place on the list. This moment was particularly special for Iyer, as he returned to lead the team after a staggering 63 T20Is away from the captaincy, setting a record for the longest gap before a first T20I captaincy.

Iyer’s appointment also marked another significant milestone. Prior to taking charge of the national team, he had already captained 114 T20 matches in domestic and franchise cricket, the highest number for any Indian before stepping into T20I captaincy. His rise to captaincy highlights India’s strategy of favoring experienced leaders with a solid tactical background before entrusting them with the national team.
