Max Verstappen, the F1 racing star from the Netherlands, has now found himself at a critical junction in his career as a race car driver. Verstappen, who began as an exceptional teen and went on to clinch 4 Formula One titles, has started the 2026 season poorly. The driver from Red Bull is currently out of contention after the opening rounds of the championship. A fierce race car driver, Verstappen is now not just about winning races but about the future of Formula One. Changes in regulation and the dynamics of his own team have put his next step into consideration as one of the major discussions of the season.
Verstappen, 28, told reporters on Thursday ahead of the Miami Grand Prix weekend about his future plans, as he said, “I still have time and I’m taking my time.. What I said in Japan is still the same, but I also still have a lot of time.”
There seems to be no rush on the part of the racer as yet. Verstappen made it very clear that there is still plenty of time for him and that he wanted to see things play out. However, what he is clearly concerned about extends beyond just performance. There are other elements including dissatisfaction with engine rules and current racing styles. Furthermore, the lack of competitiveness of Red Bull adds another dimension to the matter.
Rule Changes Failed To Impress Him
Verstappen has clearly expressed his disappointment with the recent regulation changes of Formula One, stating that they are inadequate. In Verstappen’s opinion, these changes implemented by the regulatory body are superficial, and they do not deal with the main problem that influences the quality of racing. Verstappen maintains that the sport has become too complicated and focuses too much on energy efficiency.
The changes in F1 rules has Verstappen caught with mixed feelings, stating to which he said, “With the changes that are made, I think it’s more like a tickle, because at the end of the day it’s a very complex and political sport.”
Moreover, he is convinced that at present it is impossible for the drivers to race flat out all the time. Drivers have to think about battery life and energy efficiency, which makes driving less exciting. Although Verstappen admitted that talks with the drivers have been improving, he insisted that changes were necessary. What Verstappen hopes for in the future is more radical change.
Moving On From A Key Partnership
The second significant event relates to the upcoming separation from his longtime race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase, who will soon become a part of McLaren. It should be mentioned that the duo has been working well together since 2016 and played a vital role in Verstappen’s success. At one point, he had even stated that he would leave if Gianpiero went away.
Regarding moving on from previous race-engineer Gianpiero Lambiase, he said, “The future, that’s what we are looking at now. You know, with a different race engineer. I’m sure we’ll find solutions for that as well.”
Yet, this position has changed. Currently, he accepts that change comes as part of the sport. Moreover, he supports Lambiase’s decision and claims that there are no problems between them. Verstappen admits that this level of cooperation is rather rare among drivers and engineers, but he is ready to work with someone else.
