Transfers make football today. Transfers create competition for trophies, build teams and tend to receive more attention in the media than actual games. A transfer takes place when an athlete leaves one football club to join another one at the expense of some amount of money called a transfer fee. It begins with scouting, discussions between parties, and finally, their consent. There are many reasons for clubs to buy athletes, such as improvement of results, compensation for departing talents, or future investments in talent. As well, there are plenty of reasons for athletes to leave their team and switch to another club because of financial and playing factors.
Nevertheless, the process of transferring athletes between clubs is not available anytime in the year but restricted to certain periods approved by FIFA. Besides, there are many formal requirements before signing up a player with your team. All three parties including the buyer, seller, and player must come to an agreement. For example, international transfers need additional FIFA consent in the Transfer Matching System.
What does a player’s agent do?
The footballer’s agent holds immense importance in each and every deal. Footballers have agents who look after their interests while negotiating. They talk about salaries, bonuses, contract period, and various other aspects with the buying club. Agents also arrange meetings between two clubs prior to negotiations in many instances.

Agents who work with top footballers gain immense power within the world of football. Mino Raiola and Jorge Mendes were such agents who enjoyed high prestige because of their dealings with top-class footballers. Apart from football-related issues, agents guide their clients regarding sponsorship and career choices. Their influence can sometimes speed up or delay transfers depending on negotiations.
What is ‘tapping up’?
‘Tapping up’ refers to a club contacting a player without permission from the player’s current club. Football authorities ban this practice, but accusations regularly surface during transfer windows. The rule exists to stop clubs from secretly convincing contracted players to force moves.
Despite the ban, tapping up remains difficult for police. Clubs often communicate indirectly through agents or intermediaries. Arsenal faced accusations during their pursuit of Mykhailo Mudryk before Chelsea completed the signing. Similar claims also emerged during Chelsea’s interest in Michael Olise. Such disputes often create tension between clubs before deals are finalised.
What is a free transfer?
Free transfer refers to the process whereby a footballer leaves his/her team without paying any transfer fees. Such a situation is likely to arise when the term of a footballer’s contract comes to an end. A footballer is allowed to start negotiations with other teams once he/she has only six months left on his/her contract.
The practice became widely recognized following the Bosman ruling in 1995. Teams have since become vulnerable to losing their talented players at zero cost if they delay in renewing their contracts. The practice has gained much popularity in the world of football in recent times.
What is a transfer request?
A transfer request is a formal statement from a player asking to leave a club. Players often use it when their club refuses transfer offers or blocks negotiations. It publicly signals unhappiness and increases pressure on the club to consider a sale.
Some transfer requests succeed quickly, while others fail completely. Leeds United’s Wilfried Gnonto attempted to force a move through this method, but the club resisted. Fans also tend to react strongly because transfer requests can damage the relationship between players and supporters.
FIFA Transfer Matching System
FIFA Transfer Matching System (TMS) oversees all the international transfers between the clubs. It requires that both parties upload the same transfer details onto their online portal, before the transfer is approved. This service was created by FIFA in order to facilitate fast, transparent, and regulated transfers.
Only after this is done, the football association will confirm the transfer, allowing the player to represent his/her new team. In cases when deadline day arrives, clubs use deal sheets in order to extend the time of the transfer process, while FIFA deadline still remains.
