FIFA confirms Zee Entertainment as India broadcaster for World Cup 2026

FIFA could not have found a better time for signing the contract with Zee Entertainment because the date of the next Football World Cup is approaching, and until now, it was not known whether Indians would get the opportunity to watch the tournament live in the country. The newly signed broadcast rights agreement means that the audience will see the games of the upcoming FIFA World Cup, which is scheduled to take place between June 11-30 in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. It should also be noted that the deal between FIFA and Zee Entertainment will cover the rights of the 2030 FIFA World Cup and many other FIFA tournaments.

It should be emphasized that the value of the contract has not been officially announced, but, according to some estimates, it exceeds only 40 million dollars. Matches will be broadcast both on TV and will be available to spectators on the website ZEE5. Moreover, FIFA signed an agreement covering 39 other competitions held under the auspices of the international organization, including the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup and youth futsal championships.

FIFA rights value drops amid weak broadcaster interest

Court case highlighted the broadcast uncertainty

The absence of a broadcaster had triggered public concern and even legal action. In May, the Delhi High Court sought responses from the Centre and Prasar Bharati after a petition requested government intervention to ensure World Cup coverage in India. The plea called for at least key matches, including the opening game, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final, to be made available to viewers. The case reflected growing anxiety among football followers as the tournament approached. The Zee-FIFA agreement has now resolved those concerns and guarantees access to all 104 matches of the expanded competition.

FIFA lowers bids as broadcasters stay cautious

This move brings into the spotlight the evolving economics of sports broadcasting. FIFA had hoped to fetch close to $100 million for its broadcast rights from the 2026 and 2030 World Cups before lowering the expectations to $60 million in a report. Nonetheless, the interest from the media houses was lukewarm. JioStar, which had broadcast the previous 2022 World Cup via its parent company Viacom18, made offers ranging between $15 million and $20 million before withdrawing. Meanwhile, Sony, which broadcasted the 2014 and 2018 World Cups, engaged in talks but did not place a bid.

Zee expands sports presence with new channel network

For the purposes of supporting the partnership with FIFA, Zee has rolled out four separate sports channels under the banner of Unite8 Sports. The channel lineup consists of Unite8 Sports 1, Unite8 Sports 1 HD, Unite8 Sports 2 and Unite8 Sports 2 HD. This channel will provide coverage of FIFA tournaments within India for the coming years. It is significant that this development signals a return to the world of sports broadcasting for Zee, which had abandoned the segment around nine years ago. In addition to football, Zee intends to broadcast various other types of sports, including cricket, kabaddi, badminton, wrestling and combat sports.
