Virender Sehwag was caught in a controversy on social media after an off-script moment occurred where he made an error regarding the name of India’s finest fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah. The moment arose after an episode hosted on Cricbuzz prior to IPL 2026 between Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings. Sehwag was talking about the Mumbai team’s bowlers in that episode,
but in the process, he made the mistake of referring to Bumrah as “Chumrah.”
It should be noted that it was during Sehwag’s analysis of Mumbai Indians’ bowlers when he mistakenly referred to Bumrah as “Chumrah” and corrected himself immediately.
In the meantime, Bumrah has had an extraordinarily low profile in the ongoing IPL 2026 edition. In 12 games, the Mumbai bowler managed to pick just three wickets. Bumrah’s economy rate has remained in the vicinity of 8.5, with a bowling average above 100. It is quite low from a bowler known for deciding matches.
Bumrah Dominates World Rankings
Bumrah is still the highest-ranked Test bowler, even though he had an unremarkable IPL campaign. According to the International Cricket Council’s latest rankings, he is the first-ranked player with a total of 879 points, showcasing his dominance in Test cricket. There is a considerable difference between the performance of Bumrah in the IPL and Test rankings. Although he has been unable to take too many wickets in the T20 competition, he has retained his position among a group of high-class players where Mitchell Starc is second, and Matt Henry is third. Pat Cummins has taken the fourth spot.
Mohammad Siraj is the next best Indian bowler, ranked 12th. He is followed by Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav, ranked 14th and 15th, respectively.
Fans Hit-back At Virender Sehwag After The Comment
The video went viral and generated numerous reactions on X and Instagram. A number of Twitter users raised questions regarding whether the comment made by Sehwag was unintentional. While some found the statement offensive, there were others who believed Sehwag was just provoking someone.
Sehwag’s comment sparked controversy as the Indian bowler is among the most respected players in the country. Despite having a disappointing year in the IPL, batsmen still handle him carefully. It has been observed that Mumbai used Bumrah mainly when he had a costly over.
