Ex-Captain Tamim Iqbal Elected New Bangladesh Cricket Board President

Tamim Iqbal, who served as the captain of the team once before, has entered a new field in the world of cricket. He has become the youngest president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) at an age of 37. Former opener Tamim Iqbal has won an outright mandate in the election held in the board. He managed to collect 73 out of the total of 75 votes that were cast during the elections. The vote-counting ceremony took place in the Sher-e Bangla National Stadium. The recent development is highly important for Bangladesh cricket as there have been some problems related to the administration of this sport in the country recently.

This change in career path is very important for Tamim Iqbal who was once captain of the national team. The former player of the opening department of the national team had headed the BCB’s interim committee since April when some changes were made in the leadership due to a corruption probe.

Tamim after the election on Sunday said, “We have to deal with 1972 councillors. So they also have to agree. But for the betterment of Bangladesh cricket, if any constitutional changes are needed, we will definitely discuss and consider them.”

The former captain also acknowledged that meaningful change would take time. Having recently entered cricket administration, he said he is still getting acquainted with many members involved in the board’s functioning. As a result, the new leadership plans to hold discussions and assessments before introducing major reforms. The focus, according to Tamim, will be on identifying areas that need improvement and addressing them through consensus.

New BCB Chief Pledges Transparency and a Fresh Start

One of the main points made by Tamim following his election was that there should be clarity in everything that goes on in the BCB. According to him, the board will operate in good faith and never undertake anything that might result in controversy. Tamim also spoke about collective effort, stating that regaining the respect of Bangladesh cricket was a task that required the participation of all interested parties.

Tamim has pledged for integrity as he said, “I hope we can be as transparent as possible. Because I am sure I do not want any of my board members to do anything that makes us controversial. From my side and from the whole board’s side, we will try to act with full honesty.”

It is noteworthy that Tamim is a seasoned player of cricket. Over the course of a 15-year international career, Tamim played 70 Test matches and 243 One-Day Internationals for Bangladesh. In addition, Tamim appeared in a total of 391 international matches and accumulated over 15,000 runs. Moreover, he led the Bangladesh team 38 times and brought victory to them 21 times. Now, as cricket chief, Tamim’s job is completely different as he has to manage the sport’s administration.
