Cricket in Europe may be on the brink of a new era. The European T20 Premier League, abbreviated ETPL, is soon expected to debut in Europe. Featuring franchise-based teams across Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands, ETPL is slated to take place in August-September 2026. It will include six city teams that play 33 matches across cities such as Dublin, Belfast, Amsterdam, and Glasgow. ETPL is backed by the national cricket board and international investors such as Abhishek Bachchan, the ETPL aims to mix local talent with global stars. With structured squads, shared revenues and ICC backing, it targets both development and commercial growth.
The idea started in 2019, although it has since been halted until now. Having received private funds, the ETPL will emphasize stability and long-term thinking. Six Teams, One Compact Competition
The first tournament will consist of six teams. They include Dublin, Belfast, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Amsterdam, and Rotterdam. All teams will play each other twice before proceeding to playoffs. The first four teams will make the playoffs after the round-robin phase. Altogether, there will be 33 games that will determine the winner within four weeks.
Three Nations, Shared Vision
This is a joint venture between Cricket Ireland, Cricket Scotland, and Royal Dutch Cricket Association. This league unites three cricketing communities into one tournament. The purpose of this approach is to foster rivalry among regions while sharing resources. Additionally, this framework ensures that new talents from other European nations can join this league.
Steve Waugh, a two-time World Cup winner for Australia is excited regarding his opportunity as he said, “This opportunity came up about three or four months ago. Being involved in a European T20 competition is something I never thought I’d be involved in.”
Indian Bollywood-star Amitabh Bachchan explained regarding the tournament that, “So the tournament for this year is going to be played in two centres in Dublin and in the Netherlands, which already have wonderful pitches.”
Countdown to Summer 2026
The opening season is planned for between August 26 and September 20, 2026. Games will be held in Ireland and the Netherlands, and also in Scotland. The venues that will host games are Malahide, in Dublin; Stormont, in Belfast; and VRA Ground, in Amsterdam. The compact schedule helps reduce travel and costs.
Global Backing, Local Focus
ETPL is an official initiative supported by the International Cricket Council, which provides credibility and consistency with international cricket schedules. On the other hand, ETPL focuses on the growth of Europe. Local talent should be predominant in each squad. Revenue sharing and flexible ownership models will encourage various investors to invest.
