Cricket South Africa (CSA) is yet to find a suitable candidate to hand over the Test captaincy responsibility after Faf du Plesis stepped down earlier this year. While Quinto de Kock has been appointed as limited over captain of the side but for the longest format, Graeme Smith, the Director of CSA, is still looking for a suitable candidate.
Dean Elgar who recently recovered from an injury has now expressed his desire to lead the side in Tests. He also added that he has ample experiences with him which will ultimately help him while leading the Proteas in the Tests.
Leadership is something that comes naturally to me
Expressing his desire to lead the side Dean Elgar said, it would be great honour for him to be a Test captain of South Africa.
“If I was asked to do the captaincy it’s definitely something I’d think long and hard about because it would really mean a lot to me,” ANI quoted Elgar.
“It’s definitely not an easy journey being a Test captain but I think leadership is something that comes extremely naturally to me,” he added.
Captaincy is not a job interview
Currently, the most experienced player in the Squad while speaking his mind maintained that captaincy is not a job interview. There’re people who will select a player to captain the side and if they select Elgar, he would be quite happy to grab the opportunity.
“Captaincy is not a job interview, you’re not handing in a CV. You’ve got to respect the people making the decisions and whichever way they choose, it’s ultimately their choice and you respect it. But yeah, I’ll definitely have a think about it if it’s in any way up for negotiation,” maintained Dean Elgar
