Chairman of Senior Men’s Selection Committee, Ajit Agarkar Explains Why Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel Miss India’s ODI Squad for Afghanistan Series

The Indian ODI team to face Afghanistan has become controversial due to the absence of Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel from it. According to Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector of the Indian team, the selection of the team had nothing to do with poor performances of the two players. Rather, India wishes to explore new possibilities ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup that will be hosted by South Africa. The selectors are of the view that they are aware of the capabilities of both the players. Hence, the tour of Afghanistan will be an opportunity to test other young all-rounders.

Agarkar said the move was part of long-term planning rather than a setback for two established performers. He stressed that both players remain in contention.

Agarkar after the squad announcement in Guwahati said, “With regards to one-day cricket, we have 15-16 months left to that World Cup. We know what Ravindra Jadeja or Axar Patel can do. This is the time we try to give some opportunity to some of the other guys,”

Ravindra Jadeja’s ODI Omission Linked to World Cup 2027 Planning

The selectors are looking ahead to conditions in South Africa, where the 2027 ODI World Cup will be played. As a result, they want to test players who could fit specific roles in those conditions. Jadeja’s absence is, therefore, a strategic call. India have included several all-round options such as Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harsh Dubey. The management wants to see how these players perform in international cricket. Jadeja remains India’s first-choice spin all-rounder in Tests and is still very much part of the broader plans.

Why Was Axar Patel Not Selected for the Afghanistan Series?

The exclusion of Axar Patel on the other hand is based on similar reasoning. The selectors believed that he was a tried-and-tested player who did not require a re-evaluation in a short ODI series. They would rather use this time to assess players who have not been used frequently. In this way, the Indian team will get more information before selecting their combinations for the World Cup. Given the different skills of Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy, they will have options to choose from.

Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel’s Test Stats

Jadeja is one of the best all-round performers for India in Test cricket. In 89 matches, he has scored 4,095 runs at an average of 38.27, along with six centuries and 28 half-centuries. With the ball, he has bagged 348 wickets.

Axar Patel is one of the most reliable all-rounders playing Test cricket for India. In 15 Tests, he has taken 57 wickets and scored 688 runs. Despite Axar not playing much Test cricket due to his frequent appearances in limited-overs cricket, his Test statistics prove his all-round credentials.
